I have a very small front yard. That's it! Desire was great, power and understanding were small. My last house has a very small yard.
A yard that I call a garden, no matter how small, is extremely important to me. For the joy it brings me, for the relaxation of my eyes, and because of it I can call myself a gardener!
My garden is not a secret garden. My garden comes to life, as it does every spring. Now it's a more special situation because we didn't have winter this year. I was afraid it was going to be a hard winter and wrapped all my Mediterranean plants in fabric. If I hadn't, it would have been better. Last year I didn't protect the plants and lost many of them. No two years are alike!
This year I have had flowers in the garden since January. It was supposed to be the middle of winter. It is the flower that intrigues me most, a flower that has withstood nighttime temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius. A plant that looks like an alien.
Helleborus niger. Also called the Christmas Rose, it is so beautiful that it is poisonous!
I went to the market, to the farmer's market near my house, I had to buy food. I returned home with no food but instead with this, snowdrops picked from the forest. I had some in the garden but I wanted more. Instead of cooking, I started planting. So began my first day of work in the garden this year.
I planted in front of the hydrangea bushes, which are now just dry branches. The snowdrops will bloom next year too before the hydrangea bushes have leaves and cover this spot.
I also planted in front of what I call ghosts. They are my Mediterranean plants protected against winter frost. The frost wasn't much, it was even unnaturally warm, which fooled the plants in the garden that spring had come. They have already sprouted and some have even flowered!
I was pleased to find that most flowers heralding spring are blue. Blue is my favorite color!
Only these orange ones want to be different...
Another plant that eagerly awaits the signs of spring and often tricks itself into growing ahead of time is the primrose.
The roses have started too. I love their small, tender, green leaves with red edges...
I like the Mediterranean climate, and therefore the Mediterranean vegetation. I try to plant as many specific plants as possible in my garden. Most Mediterranean plants crawl, climb, cling... and are evergreen. Some are already growing in my garden!
Everything I've told you so far happened before... Before I was forced to spend two days in the hospital. In the hospital I never had the sight of my garden in springtime. The window in my room looked out onto an inner courtyard and the only pleasant sight was the pigeons coming to rest.
This intermezo at the hospital was not pleasant at all and I only remembered it because something unexpected happened while I was there. It snowed! The first snow of this winter, coming in early March when winter usually ends. I got home in the evening and saw the snow... This happened afterwards, after I left the hospital.
The next morning I saw winter through the window. It's nice to see winter from the warmth of the house.
I'll remember this. Winter was this year in the two days I was in the hospital!
The Christmas rose is absolutely divine
YES!!! It doesn't matter how big it is but a garden can bring joy in the coldest and darkest of times. YOu're right no two seasons are the same and they do seem to swing wildly at the moment.
I lvoed everything about this post - thanks so much to bringing joy with your flowers xx
Thank you very much. I am glad to be part of this beautiful community of gardeners. It encourages me to try more with my little garden, so I have something to show for future postings.
I had no idea that it snowed there!!! You have got to be kidding? I am not paying attention or I would have known that!
I have been so tied up with worry over Ukraine, I am doing nothing but worrying and watching the news. I have stopped watching it so attentively and took notice of someone else's ways. Only look at the official one and leave the rest. I have a good imagination by now.
Your garden is so delightful, Dan! It is filled with hope and beauty and spills out from its spot! You know how much I love this!
You have always been a gardener, even when you didn't call yourself one! In so many ways, you are a gardener of life. The longer I know you, the more I believe that especially as I discover little things about you. You have grown in different ways since you first showed up here, just as your garden has.
Wonderful post!
Yes, Denise! After a winter like a spring, we now have here a spring-like winter. Negative temperatures and frost. Many trees are almost in bloom, roses have buds, and if it freezes, they will lose their first row of blooms. This has happened many times before.
In Ukraine, it is very bad for people. You know that Romania has a very long border with Ukraine and hundreds of thousands of refugees come to us. I see them every day on TV. Impressive and sad, the hardest is to see the children!
Gardener, I'm glad you consider me a gardener and thank you for believing what you say about me. It's more than flattering to me. It's the same as I think of you, discovering in the time since we've known each other more and more remarkable things. The difference is that while I have grown over time, you have been a remarkable personality from the beginning!
The garden looks wonderful even under the snow. It seems like a mild snow, so I think the mediterranean plants will be fine. I am as curious as you are about what's coming next!
And you are so right, there are no two years alike! Especially in gardening and farming, one thing I know for sure is that you can never be sure of what you are doing, which should leave us with a sence of relaxation rather anxiety I guess.
The view from the window with all these flowers is uplifting! I hope you are resting and that you feel better and better every day!
Oh, of course you would have a garden full of blue flowers, haha, they are magnificent!@bluemoon, I am sooo happy to see you here again!
Thank you!
After a winter like a spring, we now have a spring-like winter... no wonder.
I'll probably have to wait two more weeks and then I'll "strip" the plants of their winter clothes.
Thanks for liking my flowers, your confidence and enthusiasm are doing me a lot of good and my optimism is awakening!
Thank you @bluemoon! It is funny because I think of YOUR enthusiasm when I read your garden/flower/nature posts :)
Yes, I understand. When I said enthusiasm I was thinking of your generosity in praising my little garden.
Oh yes, well, it is a beautiful garden and the gardener certainly deserves both the enthusiasm and the praise!
Thank you very much!
A great collection of spring flowers. So nice to finally have it warming up.
Thank you, Pryde! Spring is coming, I hope it brings good things for everyone.
So many pretty flowers, it must be an amazing view especially in the spring time.
Also, your window seal looks incredible with all those plants and flowers. :)
Yes, in the spring, the garden looks good. Last fall I made some changes and I'm curious how it will look this year too. Thanks so much, glad you like the flowers!
I have a garden both in front and at backyard of my house. Also, I can say that I can use the leftside as a garden, but I don't. The flowers in the garden have not bloomed yet, I think they will in a few weeks.
It means you have a beautiful garden, I too would love to have a garden both in the front and back of the house. You have more landscaping possibilities.
You mentioned the hospital, what happened to you? Are you okay now? By the way, I am excited to see your plants grow again and I love your orchids.
Thank you! I am also waiting for the plants to grow and especially to see how the more sensitive plants, which are now protected with fabric, have overcome the cold weather. Yes, I had arrhythmia problems and had to have surgery. The results seem to be good, now I have to rest.
That's good to hear, rest well and get strong fast, I am excited to see some updates about your garden (^_^)
Thanks!
You're welcome (^_^)

Really lovely to see some flowers in a #gardenjournal post - I love that first one. It's clear you take pleasure in your garden even if' it's not huge - it's still a space to enjoy and flowers always bring hope, don't you think? And yay for Spring, bringing hope and warmth, right? Thanks for joining in!
It's really my pleasure! I love flowers, unfortunately, I don't have room to grow vegetables, I would have loved that too.
