Good afternoon fellow Hive gardeners!
This is my July update on all of the remarkable progress that has been occurring in my garden...before the UK started to melt that is! Due to this current heatwave, the garden is struggling, and many of my plants may be unable to cope. So here it is beforehand, we'll see in a couple of weeks how much of it can survive.
Ladybirds and other beneficial insects have made their way in to the garden, this will definitely help to fend off the aphids!
Keeping the soil from drying out is tough at the time of year but my propagators help, they also keep the pesky birds from pulling up all of my seedlings.
A beautiful Borage flower. Bees go absolutely crazy for this plant so I try to let if flourish in as many places as possible. The flowers are great in cocktails and salads too!
Every time I head out in to the garden I can't help but eat a few of these Alpine Strawberries. They are small but pack a very sweet punch!
I've been glad to see my Kale plants doing really well. I have around 11 in total meaning we should be able to freeze a lot to use over the cold winter months!
This well established Lavender patch gives off a lovely calming smell that fills this side of the garden.
A first for me this year has been to grow my own tomatoes. I somehow managed to forget to plant any seedlings this spring, however luckily my step daughter noticed that someone in the neighbourhood had an excess and was giving them away. I replanted them into large pots and eventually transplanted them on into my raised beds. While my forgetfulness means I only have two plants, I'm happy to say that they are doing well and have started to fruit. Can't wait to see how big they get and give them the all important taste test! 😀
This Little Gem Lettuce has been hiding underneath a giant Rainbow Chard plant. While I was a little annoyed at myself for not giving it enough space it has turned out that it is surviving the heat wave better than the others. A valuable lesson that crowding is not always a bad thing!
That's all from me today. I'll hopefully be back soon to celebrate the survivors of this ridiculous heat wave. +35 degrees celsius is definitely not what we're used to here in the North-East of England! 😰🌞 As always thank you so much for stopping by any sharing my growing season with me, as well as all of the support you all show!
Good luck, stay hydrated and happy harvesting!

i heard about the heat wave in the UK! i love that strawberry pot photo. those look good! the leaves look
k gnarlier than normal strawberries. i wonder how they taste 🍓
They are great! If I had more pots I'd grow many of them as the fruits are so small. They are basically just a super sweet strawberry. Thanks for stopping by!
It always makes me smile to see a productive vegetable garden in the UK as I know your growing season is short. It's so different from growing where I am ..I did used to live in Dorset so I understand the climate and I missed growing something all year round!
Everything looks so healthy and lovely. It must be a job in this heat making sure it all gets watered.
Glad to be of service! I've only been gardening for a few seasons but I work from home so the time I spend out there is a welcome respite! The season is indeed very short, especially here in near the Scottish borders as the chances of getting a late frost are huge!
Yeah, the weather has been horrendous! Definitely not helped by the fact that I finally caught covid too. I've lost a lot of seedlings but we'll get through it and hopefully have a lot of good harvests to come!
Thank you so much for stopping by!
Oh no ..COVID sucks. It's knocked me back a bit too.
I could only garden in the UK again if I had a polytunnel!!
I have been dreaming of planting lavender, I hope I can make it a reality. By the way, I love your lavender. Greetings from the Philippines!
Hey, I'd highly recommend it! I currently don't use it for anything other than attracting pollinators but it smells fantastic! Really low maintenance too.
Thank you for the recommendation. I think I also need to attract pollinators to my garden.
You have a beautiful garden. I hope the heatwaves don't destroy your plants!
Thank you very much! Yeah, me too. I find it easier to deal with the temperature being below freezing than being this hot! Hopefully we'll get some rain soon and everything recovers. Thank you for stopping by, it's hugely appreciated!
You're very much welcome! I wish I could send you some rain Lol. it's been showering here for weeks now!
See you around!

I tried growing tomatoes last year and it took me weeks and weeks for a tomato bud to appear. I think the culprit is the soil that I used. I got frustrated and will never do it again. 😆
Don't give up, it's all trial and error after all! I haven't bothered fertilizing them, I just gave them a heavy mulch with my homemade compost and that seems to be enough.
