I call myself a lazy gardener, but really I just get too busy with other stuff and my garden isn't a high priority in my life. I do enjoy it though and there is nothing as satisfying as making a meal out of home grown produce. Today I am making Tacos and I'll be using both the Tomatoes and Chillis from the garden so thought I might do an update on my Makeshift Victory Garden that I first planted over a year ago.
Full disclosure - After last years growing season I did pretty much nothing in the garden. Nil. Zilch. I had ripped the tomato plants out and the chillis looked like there were going to be dead so I cut them back pretty hard. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the following spring the tomatoes had self-sown and the chillis came back to life as the weather got warmer so I thought I better pull my finger out and try to give them another good season.
The tomatoes were already out of control, but I did try to stake them, cut down the lower foilage and tie them up a little. That worked for a little while and then I had to train them down the side fence to keep them off the ground (and still in reach) They do look ugly and I have had a bit of a problem with black spot fungus on the leaves. The climate here is generally great, but we've had a hot and humid summer so the black spot has been the biggest challenge this season.
I've also had a bit of a problem with the tomatoes splitting as they ripen. This is because we've had some extremely hot and dry days and some really wet days and the irregular watering causes them to grow irregularly and burst. I still need to put a proper watering system in but yeh, see my lazy disclaimer in the opening paragraph...
I am really happy with the chillis though. I got a massive harvest last year despite the storm damage and the subsequent Forced Chilli Harvest and this year the plants are even healthier, bigger and there is heaps of fruit on them. I don't know what I'm going to do with all those chillis but I've got a couple of weeks to figure it out.
The tomato harvest looks so nice. and yeah, one way to keep the chili growing is to hard prune them and give them another season to produce, rather than sowing them from the seed again as it will take longer time and extra care. but the prune one already have a stronger root system, if they managed to regrow again.
I love little tomatoes. They go great with salads and make wonderful snacks. You are much like me and a real crappy gardener, but we can still grow stuff :-)
Tomatoes are quite easy, just water them and they will spam you with tomatoes, i see you already set wood sticks that's fine... My grandparents used to throw sulphate for parasite before flowering
Wow! Your garden is looking great. You should be really happy with how it is turning out. Those look like some juicy cherry tomatoes!
The color of your tomatoes is very beautiful, they look very delicious. You can grow some other fruits besides tomatoes and you have a lot of space there.
ahhhhhh, plants are awesome and grew despite a lack of tending.. 😉😎🤙
When there is such space and garden in the house, it is much better for the health of all of us, so we also try to do the same in our house.
