When the rain is falling, or even just sprinkling, I take it as an invitation to accomplish a few items on my garden to-do list. Over the past weekend I had such an opportunity and spent a few hours each day transplanting flowers and sowing seeds in the rain.
All the previous years that I have lived here I have dedicated my attention and energy to a garden that is about a minute walk away from my house. My goal this spring is to set up a decorative and medicinal garden in the patio just around my home. I hoped to see the flowers and have the herbs on hand rather than hidden away in the fenced in garden behind the hedgerow.
I also have a lot of potted herbs and flowers that were out-growing their containers. So, I transplanted this mint alongside a few cosmos plants that were just about to burst out the ceramic or plastic pots they were in previously.
And only a few days after the transplanting of the cosmos they started to bloom! A sign that they are indeed happy with my choice to put them in the earth rather than keep them contained in a plastic pot.
The true star of the herbal/decorative garden so far in the past year has definitely been catnip! This herb grows wildly around the land and for the past few months I have been transplanting volunteer plants from the fields/forest into a kind of border for my potted plants around the patio.
In winter the catnip plants were some of the only one to survive the frost and brought a lovely green to the otherwise dry landscape. And in spring/summer they provide lovely shade for the potted plants garden which are mostly in black plastic pots that can heat up in the intense afternoon sun.
Catnip is also an herbal medicine. My cats love this plant which gives them euphoric, and later relaxing, feelings. I like to make the tea to help alleviate gas and an upset stomach and the fresh flowers make a great addition in fermented beverages.
Fabulous, dear hiver, @calendulacraft
Thank you so much!!
What a great job, you will surely have a thriving garden of medicinal herbs and many flowers 🙏
The winter frost can be a threat, here it burns many of my plants and flowers, I hope at least the Lady of the night has survived 😶
Thank you so much! Luckily it is summer here and I still have a while before the winter frosts threaten my plants. Hope all is well this winter in your garden!

I love the cosmos plant, I am sure they will make your garden vibrate with their beauty.
