A rainy day work in the garden, spring is around the corner!

in HiveGarden2 years ago

Hello beautiful hivers!

This is my first post in the Hive Garden community and i hope not the last one...

The days are getting longer in northern hemisphere, temps are started to go up as well and you can smell the spring in the air...I know there is another while till real spring arrives but its a time for me to start working in the garden again..
Had some spare time, the weather wasnt great but nothing better like a rainy day in the greenhouse..the sound of the rain banging on but you still nice and dry inside, so i decided to do my first repotting this year, it was time for some maples...

When i trim my trees i usually do not throw out the off cuts but instead i try to use them as cuttings and root them, tell me if its not a better satisfaction when you create a new tree from nothing....

Last year i trimmed one of my common maples - i believe its Acer macrophyllum and also my sugar maple - Acer saccharum both of them have stunning autumn colors....
I had about 6 bigger branches of common maple and same from sugar maple, i simply put them in pots without even using rooting powder and put them into shady corner of the garden...out of all of them this year i can see that buds are getting bigger on 2 common maple and 3 sugar maple which gives my about 50% success and im happy with it consider i did nothing around them, didn't even water them once.. will see maybe couple more will come up to live later on....

So i got them ready and started repotting process.
There were number of cutting in the same pots so i had to split them into separated ones, that was a task for today....

I got so excited that i forget to take a photo before i took the first one out of the pot, anyway you can see them here...
Just a note - they are about 6ft tall so hard to get them in the frame...

The root system looked promising however one of the cuttings was dead and i had to discard it but other two were fine..

after gently splitting them apart i got this result

After that i simply put them in new pots, i like to use organic fertilizer, i use old organic tea bags and they work well for me (didn't take photos of them this time) and refilled with the soil, so here they are...

Now it was time for sugar maples

Again roots looked promising

I was surprised how well some of them rooted, very impressive...

And again, they went to separated pots...
This time i managed to take photos of fertilizer tea bags, that is a way i use them...

Now when they are cover with the soil - cuttings can go in and be refilled with the soil

There even were some worms in the soil and of course i left them there

SAM_9503.JPG

And here they are in their new homes...

SAM_9504.JPG

They were moved to sheltered corner to avoid any wind damage, once they get a leaves on them i will move them to the sunny spot...
Thats all five of them there....

So that was my day with maples....i got my garden fix...
Stay tuned as more garden work is on plate for next couple of weeks...

Thanks for stopping by.

Peace and Love!
