San Francisco is by the seaside with sandy soil, foggy and sometimes quite cool summer conditions, and small backyards -- we are the second densest city in the U.S. after New York City. Pumpkins and big squashes take up a lot of resources and room, and then the summer weather does not always cooperate with fruit setting or getting ripe in time. Annuals are not reliable here ... tree fruits, though, are reasonably reliable if they do not require overmuch chilling in the winter and overmuch heat in the spring and summer.
