Slugs love beer, but so do all kinds of insects. The only thing that really works for me is a pair of gloves and a bucket of boiling water.
There is also slug bait based on iron-phosphate, which is essentially fertilizer and non-toxic, but also way less effective. For small numbers of high-value plants, those angled slug barriers do work quite well, too.
