If you got your entry in during the first week, then read on to see if you're the lucky winner of 5 HIVE! As they say, the early bird catches the worm! I hope you understand that we could only curate posts with the #gardenjournal tag as that way we knew who was entering the challenge. @sunscape is wrapping it up for the winter, a little sad she can no longer sit outside. It's been a successful season though and isn't that a lovely place to relax? @sunscape is a committed Hive Gardener and we've loved her garden and cooking and preserving posts throughout the year.

@isdarmady has always shared his amazing hyroponic set up. Heavy rains in North Sumatra have caused widespread flooding and landslides, disrupting food distribution and driving up vegetable and fruit prices. In Medan, many areas have become inundated, leaving residents struggling to access fresh produce, with even poor-quality vegetables becoming a luxury. This Decemeber he's reflecting on the importance of self-sufficiency during such crises, even though he's overcoming challenges like poor sunlight impacting his crops. Having vegetables like bok choy and water spinach coming out of his hydro set help helps his family avoid financial strain and puts food on the table.

@akipponn is another dedicated Hive Gardener - they're even growing a fig from a seed they got at Hive Fest in Croatia! Even though they grow in a limited space in Germany, there's always something growing, including strawberries which seem to have a long growing season this year. If you're growing in a small space, you definitely should follow @akipponn's micro garden blog for inspiration.

@anggreklestari shares the simple joys we all get from sharing homegrown produce with family and friends, from large mustard greens to fresh chives and shallots. Using simple compost and organic methods, she proves that gardening doesn’t need chemicals to yield impressive results. She also has a really thoughtful appreciate, like tying vegetables with tape for pressentation, showing her satisfaction around giving. If you've been following her, you'd already know about her beautiful photographs and her Indonesian cooking which is always a delight.

Please take the time to thank @owasco for all her help curating whilst I've been busy with my father's death and travelling. She always steps into help when I need it and I appreciate that so much.In this garden journal post, she reflects on her 2024 summer garden in upstate New York. It's been a productive season where she's yielded an abundance of strawberries, peaches, raspberries, and pole beans - and thus, a lot of preserving and freezing! I certainly also wouldn't mind visiting for a a peach cobbers. She has also had lots of luck with lettuce, crabapples, and pole beans, all the time planning ahead for improveents next growing season.

@multifacetas always joins in for this challenge. This too is a reflection on the growth of a garden, that like many of us, started during the pandemic. Rain has meant extra growth and more pruning. She talks about highlights such as a blooming lily and other plants magically revived by rainwater. All plants are in pots so that one day, if they move out of the rental, they can move the plants as well.

And the winner is ---

Well it was super hard to select a winner, but we chose @isdarmady as they always join in the challenge, and their post on food security despite flooding was inspiring. Everyone's posts are automatically in the running for next week's prizes - we'll see you sometime around the 16th for the final wrap up.
