Friday morning I was up at 4:15AM. Some days I wish I could sleep until 5 or 5:30AM…sigh… I got my post up, cleaned up the kitchen, and right before my helper friend arrived at 8AM, I remembered to do the milk order. Then I couldn’t find the special gloves he’d given me last year. Finally I got out to the Big garden.
We set about cleaning out oak leaves, grass, and plants that were past prime. Most of the kale that had been in the mesclun beds had huge masses of gray aphids on the new growth, none on the older leaves. This indicates to me that the new growth did not have the nutrition for health that the old growth had. We stopped foliar feeding October 1, as that’s what we’ve always done. But if I want greens later in the year, we will have to keep feeding them.
We had almost finished the cleaning out when the hay mulch guy arrived with the first load. He had brought his wife so she could see the farm. I’d not met her before.
Once unloaded we finished the cleaning out by the kale and set about mulching. We had almost gotten halfway done. The post on the far right with the yellow top is the halfway marker.
My helper friend had just enough time to unload the truck before he left. I was too wiped out to do anymore, so I quit at noon.
There were a couple lacinato kale that weren’t doing well, one had aphids, and they were pulled up. Mostly we took off the caterpillar chewed leaves. The rest of the plants look good. There were a few mustard plants left from the mesclun beds that we left too. So there’s still greens to be gotten.
Once we get the Big garden finished, we need to work in the New Herb garden getting it ready for winter. Then maybe we can tackle the flowerbeds needing cleaned out.
I watched a movie until the contractor arrived just after 3PM. He was going to try to figure out what else was wrong with the old washer. So we got it tipped on its side and examined the guts. I was told these were also inspected by Larry, but I missed that.
I had to find the schematic for the machine base. We think the 3 springs (#3) have worn out and no long keep the tub balanced. There was also a gasket not doing its job (#21) so I ordered that and 3 springs. They will be here Wednesday.
Hopefully that is the problem with agitating correctly and the old washer can be put into service.
Once the contractor got the washer upright and cleaned up the mess, he was supervised from a distance as he reattached the door gasket on the back door.
My husband had made me this bulletin board for the old kitchen. It’s been laying on the counter to be installed for years. I finally had the contractor get it up. Now I have a place to hang recipes when cooking, keeping them out of the mess.
I had to light both stoves and make supper once the contractor had gone. I watched a movie and then remembered I needed a shower. So I was an hour late to bed.
On Saturday I have to finish the parts list for the schematic, clean the kitchen and I’m hoping I can go out and put down mulch for a few hours. It’s to be another sunny day.
Wow Cute pet. 🥰
I like that bulletin board. I hope to get such for my kitchen very soon too
It makes sense

Nice one!
Hopefully to washer problem is solved!
Well, it's necessary sometimes to take extended rests or breaks from work to regain one's health. You did a good job cleaning the garden, taking out the dead and caterpillar-chewed leaves. It will help the plants to flourish more. Thanks for the update and have a great weekend.
