Wednesday was a beautiful spring day and I got outside early. The plan was to move as much of the dirt piles off the lawn or mowing areas as I could.
I started at the head of the driveway. There were 2 piles there and I was able to rake them back into the driveway, and then take the rocks and fill a hole in the middle.
The sod that had been pushed into the lawn was a bit harder, as I had to reposition it along the edge again. The grass had already started to grow. I hope with the coming rain it will take.
With that done I moved over to the much harder mess by the pasture.
This was a mix of sods and rocks and I found it pretty hard to shift.
There was a good size hole a little farther up the driveway so I put the mess there. My son later smoothed it out and it really helped that hole.
I found this pretty heavy work and wasn’t able to finish it. It still needs to be raked out smooth.
The MacIntosh apple tree has buds now.
Right in front of it the East lilacs will definitely be open by our anniversary on May 9th.
The white lilac is lagging behind a bit.
I went inside and sat down for an hour, got something to eat and went back outside. It was about 11AM.
West of Steps before...................................and after
I’d decided I couldn’t stand the mess by the front steps any longer, so I started in on the little West of Steps garden. It took a while as I had to fish all the dead stuff out of the new growth. This is much easier done before it grows. Sigh…
South garden, before................................................and after
Having won in the little garden, and still having some energy, I decided to tackle the walkway area. There was a lot of winter killed thyme and the remains of the huge alyssum from last year. Scissors worked well on the thyme, and persistence on the alyssum stems.
By the time I made it to the other steps, I was finished for the day. It was 1PM, so I’d not done too badly.
These are the 2 tulips in the South garden that didn’t get weeded this time.
Site of future garden
Tom showed up about 2PM hauling his little Kubota. He was going to drag the horse pasture of the neighbor with the 10 acre piece. My tractor was too big for the job.
He left to run errands and was back about 4PM and got the job done. He decided to leave the tractor here for us to use to try to move the dirt piles at the barn on Thursday. I think my general helper will drive it, as I doubt I’ll have the brain power.
Then we went out and laid out the new garden and the positions of the new trees, except the grapes. I haven’t figured out where those will go.
Thursday it’s to rain in the morning until about 9AM so my general helper and I will do shopping and errands and then tackle the tractor and dirt piles. I hope I remember the camera…
My helper friend will be here at 11:30 and I think I will set him to digging the new garden at the end of the shed. So another busy day here on the farm.

The lilacs are always my favorite! Beautiful garden as usual! Nothing better than working on the garden on a sunny spring day, I wish you a happy anniversary a little bit in advance ^^
Thanks!
you got a ton of stuff done! But that's what I keep noticing about your posts in general. No wonder they call you "our hardest working gardener"!
Don’t forget I have 2 helpers off and on during the week….
