Middle pasture - leaves off trees crop Nov 2024.jpg

Most of the leaves off now

On Thursday morning I was up at 4:15AM and got the post up. I did more research on the SunRun mess and then went out and cleaned up the kitchen. I was starting to get stuff done that had been left all week. The laundry got put away, packages needing to be returned were dealt with, a list for my helper friend was started, and several other things got done.

My sister called me at 9AM to tell me she had 2” of snow on the ground in NM. That’s very unusual for where she is. I, on the other hand, was looking at around 60F outside on November 7th in New England. Crazy weather!

My friend who I had hoped to spend Thanksgiving with wrote to say she had made other plans and offered some alternatives. So we are driving to the Maine coast next Wednesday to get lobster dinners. That’s what we’d been thinking of having for Thanksgiving.

Big garden - 1-3 done crop Nov 2024.jpg

I got out into the Big garden around 10:30AM and started cleaning out the south side of the comfrey. I’d only done the north side as far as I could reach last time. The wind was blowing stuff everywhere, so I mulched as soon as I cleaned out an area.

I had started on the end of the parsnip row near the comfrey. It looks like the voles, etc are getting an early start. I don’t anticipate having a hard frost much before December and at the rate they are going, there might not be any left. I’ll have to ask my brother if he wants to dig early. Without the frost, they won’t sweeten up as much.

I had gotten much of the east section cleaned out and mulched by the time my helper arrived at noon. He dumped all my full sleds and mulched behind me as I cleaned out the chard.

Then I went up the walkway between the parsnips and chard. He mulched right behind me.

I cleaned up the mess in the main walkway then started working my way back to the east side. He was mulching and got to the Brussel sprouts. They had not been fed since September and were covered in gray aphids. So we pulled them out.

The hay ran out for mulch so he started cleaning up. I finished the stretch I was cleaning out to the east fence. It was 2PM.

When I got inside I found an e-mail from SunRun. I had been assigned a new Escalations Expert and she would be handling my case, finally. So we will see how long it takes to fix the inverter this time.

Big garden - as far as we got crop Nov 2024.jpg

This is as far as we got on the north half of the Big garden. The wind was really picking up, as it does mid afternoon, so it was time to call it quits.

Besides the parsnips and chard on the north end, all that’s left in the garden now is all this kale of different types, and the mounds of horehound on the upper right.

Birdseed for winter crop Nov 2024.jpg

The farmers’ coop where my helper friend lives was having a sale on bird seed. So he picked up these 2 and some thistle seed for me and a bunch of stuff for his house. Now I wait until it’s cold enough for the bears to hibernate before putting up the feeders.

I sent him on errands and got a shower. When he got back, we decided to call it quits, even though he still had 2 hours. We were too tired and had a 4 hour shift on Friday morning starting at 8AM.

At 4PM I had to light the masonry heater and wood stove as the temps would drop to the upper 30’s during the night. But Friday is to be sunny and hit the low 60’s, so it will be nice outside. We will be back in the Big garden trying to finish it.

Good luck 🍀

Lot's of work.. even after the fall harvest and clean up.
Looking real good though!
Chard looks great.
Our leaves are just about done. One good windy day should do it. We haven't had a drop of rain here in southern NJ in 38 days! It's been a record setting event for sure.

Much the same here in Western Mass since the first of September…

Excellent work, with the winter frost it is difficult to keep plants and crops healthy.

Oh man I hope for snow soon. It's been a really warm autumn here.

Lol bears going at the bird feeders. Damn annoying.

We’ve only had the bears get the feeders once, when they came out of hibernation on the first of March!

I guess we are lucky we have not had much bear damage yet. Always worried they will come close to the house at night. But seems they always stay a few hundred feet away... so far.

Good job, my friend
Please, what does a lobster dinner looks like?

Well, it can be many things. A whole lobster with many different side dishes to chose from. Or just the tail. Or lobster meat in a sauce, or just dipped in butter. Or lobster stew…

So much work to do as usual
The walkway is looking very neat and well kept.

I hope you celebrate Thanksgiving peacefully and with joy. A lobster dinner is a fitting choice. You did a whole lot of useful chores yesterday and that's good. It's also good the inverter problem might be fixed soon. I wish you the best going into the weekend.

You always have so much to do 😁
Let's see how Sunrun handles it this time.

That’s a lot of great work
Nice!
