It has been a while since I read a book written by Masanobu Fukuoka and watched a document and a video about his work.
This autumn, I decided to apply one of his methods in a garden. It seemed to me as a good chance for the seeds with expired shelf-life. First, I’m posting pictures of the place. You can get an idea about the terrain. It’s situated around 400 m above sea level, in the temperate climate zone and exposed predominantly to the south. The soil consists of sand mostly.
I chose the clay balls method to spread seeds all around the garden. I fell in love with its simplicity, yet ingeniusness. I needed three buckets - one for soil, one for water and one for mixing.
In the first step, I added different seeds.
In the second step, I added clayish soil and mixed properly with seeds.
In the third step, I sprinkled water on the mixture little by little while I was mixing everything together again. I aimed at making compact ballswhich the seeds would be wrapped in.
I made three variations of clay balls with different seeds according to the type of site where I scattered them.
What seems to me ingenius about this method? The clay ball makes the seeds worse visible for birds. There is a smaller chance that they will become their food. Clay keeps moisture very well. It will provide the seeds with the right amount for germinating when the other conditions will be met also.
