It had been two weeks since I got some newbie greens for my container garden. Within that time, it was still freezing during the night. So I couldn´t plant the tomatoes and the lettuce in containers outside. We´ve had between -2°C to -4°C in the night. I couldn´t take the containers inside the flat because I do not have that much space.
I have oregano, rosemary, basil, tomatoes, bell pepper and mini cucumber. The rosemary is frost tough and sustained the temps outside, unfortunately the oregano and the rest are frost sensitive.
I can't wait for the day when I can start planting in containers outside. My goodness, yesterday was already officially Spring. (calendar-wise!) I'm used to this as I've been planting in containers for years, even on the roof of our former house. The reason I had my pots on the top terrace was because of the slugs in the garden. We had a lot of them coming from the fields that surrounded the whole complex. They always devastated my flowering plants overnight.
Now that I only have a balcony, well...I have to make use of it. Last weekend, we got two new wooden trellis. I can attach the branches of the tomatoes particularly the cherry tomato variety that I had before. They really grow so tall and branch out so fast. Instead of bamboo sticks or metal spirals, the trellis should be of help to my plants.
The lettuce newbies are in dire need to be planted already, I will try tomorrow but perhaps will have to put a transparent cover for the top to protect them from frost.
I already bought a pouch of onions that already need planting, the box is ready for them but the weather is not.
Last year, I only had two cherry tomatoes and another variety called beefsteak tomatoes. And I was succesful with those since I really had plenty of harvest here and here.
I was more surprised to see that my celery plant from last year has been sprouting since days and with many new leaves, and i am über happy... I thought the plant is frost sensitive. I know now that I do not need to discard the bottom of a bought celery, instead I will plant them in containers to have ingredients for my cooking and salads this Summer.
Still hoping that the temperatures will soon be warmer.... am crossing my fingers!
If I would have chosen what I wanted to be when I grow up, I would have chosen to be a farmer. That was my dream because my Mom had a beautiful garden well taken cared by someone she hired who really knew how a garden would flourish. The man was a gardener and I envied his plants on our ground located behind our canteen in mid 60s. My dream of becoming a farmer did not materialize, being the only girl growing up with five boys, I chose to be practical and became an accountant instead.
I remember the thick healthy spinach, the purple yum called ube as well as the banana trees planted along the path to the creek, the parsley and the upo (gourd) and many more. How I cherised those moments when we only had to go behind the canteen to harvest fresh tomatoes and potatoes... Fond memories that still got stuck in my mind...that was kind of a paradise place for me.
Patience @mers sooner you can have that welcoming weather to plant all that greens and you'll reap a good harvest when it's time.🌱☺️🌾
I know, as I said I will venture today to plant the newbies....
For now, am sure they're happy that they have you.
You're always awesome in everything that you do ate :*Dont worry @mers, you'll have spring very soon and those greens will be happier.
Hahaha, thanks a ton!
Onion can go into the ground as soon as you can work it. remember a lot of folks plant them in fall, and they can overwinter... so, planting as soon as the ground is thawed enough to work it, gives them a chance to get a head start. I'd say, as long as it is about 5ºC that is good enough. 10ºC is even better. But they can handle cold. (That's 40 to 50ºF).
I love the herbs and the tomato coming along. I am so frustrated... seeds are germinating indoors and starting to sprout. BUT please, let the weather warm up here in New England!
Yeah, thanks for the reminder about the onion, they are being planted for the leaves only which I cut for my porridge and soup. when they are done with the leaves I discard them. I do not have space like before since moving to a flat, we only have a balcony and I plant in containers. I used to plant my tulip bulbs in Fall before we leave for Andalusia ( Winter destination). When we come back each year end of Feb, the leaves sprout already. It is beginning to get warmer here in Vienna and I would like to start with planting in containers, hopefully no more frost in the night.
I have read about the long winter season in New England, a friend of mine who lives near Atlanta loved going there in Nantucket for vacay in Summer, but stopped when her husband died a couple of years ago.
Are you planting outside the house?, might as well cover the soil with foil (just like what farmers are using) when you´ve tranferred the germinated seeds. Wishing you a nice weather there!
I plant outside, in GrowBag containers:
I like to control the soil and fertilizer, as well as water, so I use containers.
Typically, I transplant on May 1st. Or near enough, each year.
BTW, Nantucket is not far from me. An hour or so. Beautiful little island!
I love your garden... you have so many herbs and other goodies.... I will try to get updates on your garden and maybe I could learn more on your methods. Thanks for sharing.
Oh, sure... happy to share!
I am a BIG fan of eating... so, ALSO a big fan of Cooking.
And since I am a fan of food, I like to grow my own, too!
I salute always you really have a green thumb. Look at that cherry tomatoes of yours, kumpol kumpol Ang bunga grabeeh! I dream also or wish before to have a container garden when we were still renting, now, that we own a lot, I still do not have veggies in a containers because of our seven dogs. They ruined my container flowering pots plus we do not have water supply yet.We only buy in galloons.
Well, I hope I could harvest again such quantity... my hope is that there will be no worms ( butterfly or bugs) like last year because it was horrendous. Thanks.
It's gotta start to warm up soon! Summer will be here before you know it and you'll be enjoying the greens, for sure.
Yeah, I hope so... today, we had 5°C so that´s a good sign, the days before last weekend, we´ve had -2°C ... But I willventure today with the planting in containers.
Maybe wait for 2 more weeks and they'll be taller and fuller.
It is getting warmer now, but I guess I have to cover the post with foil to be on the safe side.
Wow that's a lot of herbs and spices. You'll just pick them and no need to buy. A big savings. And the important thing is that they are all organic.
True... I´ll make the most of them this time. Thanks.
I hear that, I have been wanting to work the soil out back but still just to cold
Is it still snowing in Canada? Wish you a warmer Spring and good luck!
Not ATM, We are sitting between 0-5 most days but a few more minus days in the next week but after that looks like we start hitting 10c
