I always thought food came from the shop wrapped in plastic! This has been my first go at growing. I was quite happy and surprised with the results especially when I got busy at work and the veggie patch got left to its own devices. I was worried that without constant attention insects would attack and ruin my work or I would miss the right time to pick and harvest them.
Maybe I could have left the carrots in a bit longer but we will be away for a while so I pulled a few out now. Some were pretty twisted, maybe I should have planted the seeds further apart. All good learning for next time.
Some early progress photos.
I never knew carrots had so many green leaves on top. @consciouscat was able to turn some of the greenery into a smoothie. The green smoothies are always tough to drink but I know they're really good for me.
I suppose both the carrots and spring onions are a bit smaller than what I am used to buying in the shop but it does feel good to grow some.
@conscoiuscat was able to turn the carrots and spring onions into dinner. These are Cabbage Fritters and they tasted good! I could really get used to this heathy eating business.
The pumpkin plant is started to get out of control but I have not seen any pumpkins yet.
We lost the lower riper-looking paw paw. It just disappeared overnight. I have a feeling the possum that sometimes lives in my shed took a fancy to it. Though I never found any scraps lying around so I guess I'll never know.
We seem to use a lot of garlic so I put a few cloves in a pot a few weeks back and they have just started to sprout.
Other than the gardening I have been spending a fair bit of time sorting out the shed, with multiple trips to the dump.
I really need to get the house, yard and shed sorted before I finish with work and lose access to my company ute. I think this pottering around the garden, growing some veggies, plus my fitness workouts sprinkled with some travelling could be my ideal retirement.
The hard part is knowing the right time to exit work. The money is nice but finding the right work/life balance is key.
We have had a bit of rain over the past few weeks too. I have been in this area for 20 plus years and have never seen these stag or elk horn ferns just randomly start to grow like this. I like them and I'm wondering if I could transfer them to a better spot.
All the rain helped with a nice rainbow on one of our afternoon walks.
But it's not all rain, we get a lot of sunshine here in Brisbane too. So even in our winter we seem to get some nice flowers.
And that's it for this post. Thanks for reading!

Haha good man!
Great you can grew carrot well even the results are not big as from market. No problem. I think smaller carrot has sweet and yummy taste than big carrot.
I want to grow carrot and potato but not sure if soil in my area can support those things
I suppose it can not hurt to try, I hope it works for you.

Awesome work with all that growing, babe. I think you did most of the hard work there. And it was my pleasure to turn these veggies into something so edible 😁

Me too I just discovered that by reading your post.
You all make planting of seed and harvesting of crops look easy, I haven’t planted anything before other than my elementary school project where we were asked to plant a few bean seeds.
This was so nice to read, thanks for sharing😃
It was easy than I thought

That’s nice
Homegrown is the best! 😋 I remember the first carrots I grew, which I harvested waaaaay to early. Smaller than my pinky, and I was just 6 or 7 years old so that's really small! But wow, the sweet flavour, the tenderness - no need to boil and mash those delicate roots! I just rubbed the dirt off on my jeans and gobbled them down. Hmm, maybe I should look into growing some more after all these years, and harvest them early too? I think such tiny carrots would look quite cute in a bowl of ramen or a salad!
