Damn, what a job! My experience of taking out such invasive plants is that a tiller will damage the roots but not remove them and the small pieces will grow again. These need to be taken out carefully by hand, making sure it's all gone. Then you will spend a couple of seasons pulling out germinating seeds

In fact, I told me the same thing about the tiller afterwards... We will probably just go by hand and with mechanical methods :)
