Plum Jam, first Watermelons and Figs and more - Garden Journal

in HiveGarden3 months ago

Hello everyone.
As it is approaching to the end of the August there are new fruits ready in the garden and more work emerges every day.
Interesting part about garden and fruits and vegetables you have is that as season finishes for one plant it starts for the other. So if you have many several different fruits and vegetable plants each couple weeks new one is ripen and ready.
Second #gardenjournal in August and new fruit harvest.
Since my last post we harvested watermelons from our garden. Figs also started to ripen. And we picked plums from the garden and we made plum jam.
Other fruits and vegetables are doing well.
I will add the ones we use in the post.
Next big job lets say is picking apples and making apple jam and some special vegetable stew .

Watermelons

This year we had around dozen of watermelons. We left them to grew a bit longer and when we started to pick them they were so delicious.

First watermelon we picked.
More than 4 kilograms.

Melons were lovely this year.

Figs

This year due to hot weather and earlier cold and frost figs did not grew until recently. They grow in several cycles and at the beginning many of them just fell off.
And now they are ready to pick. Every day there are fig fruit that we pick. We have one big tree and several smaller fig trees.

They are delicious.

Cherry tomatoes

In our region growing outside tomatoes is a bit challenging. However this year was good for outside tomato. But when we come to Cherry tomato, regardless of the year, Cherry tomato is resilient to outside conditions and they are good to grew. They dont need that much attention.

We harvested all ripen Cherry tomatoes and stored it for later usage.

Red beet

Red beet was quite good this year. There were two types. Long one and round one.
They are in storage and later we will prepare them and store in the jars.

Long red beets.

Other vegetables from our garden.

There are still Zucchinis flowering and growing.

Flat green beans and tomatoes.

Outside tomatoes are doing good.
Flat green beans good as well.

Peas and carrots.

We have pumpkins. Pumpkin harvest should be in September.

Aronia

Two bushes of aronia berries were not yet picked (we picked other aronia bushes before) so we picked them as well.
We intend to use aronia berries while making apple Jam.

Plums and Plum Jam

These are plums from our garden. For the past several years we did not have plums in our garden. But this year there were some Plums left so we decided to make Plum Jam.
Two days ago we picked around 30 kilograms of plums.
These Plums are good for the Jam.

Plum Jam

So to make Plum Jam you need fresh Plums. Beside that you need one grinder and pot to cook the Plums. Also adding sugar is optional so you can add some sugar or you dont have to add it at all.

First step is to wash the plums and remove the pits.

After that you use grinder to grind the plums.

After that we put the grinded Plum in the jam pan. Pan is quite big - we could put all 30 kilos of plums at once.
And you stir it on the fire. At the begging the color is more reddish. Toward end you can add sugar (last hour and 30 minutes before it is done).

As it cooks it changes its color.

After almost 4 hours of cooking (several minutes short of 4 hour) the Plum Jam is ready.

In the end we have 22,5 kilograms of Plum Jam. That is very good amount of Plum Jam.

Next thing to harvest is apples and we should make Apple Jam and maybe Apple juice.

Great looking garden with loads of different veggies and fruits. Your watermelons are beautiful and a nice size. No matter what we do we've never had much luck growing watermelons.
I've never had Plum Jam but I'd love to try it. Our apples are ready as well and we hope to make some jam and applesauce.

Nice harvest!

Thank you

A nice weekend to you too!

Hey I have a question about Watermelons I have a plant outside that fruits but they keep dying. I checked on the plant 3 days ago and it was okay but today it was yellow and black any idea what may have happened?

As I saw in our garden too much sun and hot weather can affect the plant and leaves in that manner
you should water in the morning or evening - if you water in the sun leaves may dry

these are first that come to my mind and simple ones to check and know

It seemed to be doing well the past 2 weeks its been hot and dry. We started to get rainy weather and it just like rotted off the vine ☹️
