Feeding Houseplants, Trimming, and Rooting Cuttings - by Sunscape

Usually, January is the month for feeding all the houseplants, but, I have been busy organizing and cleaning different areas of the house. Unfortunately, some of them started to show signs of neglect, my bad!

This is the first time that my Fiddle Leaf Fig leaves have ever looked like this. I have had it for five years and I felt so bad when I went to water it. Not to mention that I had to put a stake in the pot to hold up the branches. It had gotten to 7' tall so I took the pruners to it, yes, I really did.

It has already started to root in the glass jar. I will have a second plant to enjoy from the mother plant. It will be interesting to see if it branches off where I took the cuttings.

The Pothos that hang in the family room runners were hitting the floor. I gave it a 3' trimming and saved a few ends to start rooting them. I was at the dentist last month and the plant they had on the counter was dying. I will be taking them to their office and sharing the cuttings with the secretary.

The small jar has trimmings from a pink Fushia that I have wintered over. I am just starting to see a few tiny white roots and am hopeful to have two hanging pots this summer.

As usual, the Boston Fern has dropped a gazillion leaves from the fronds. Even though I mist it every other day it still doesn't like the dry air in the house.

In a previous post, I asked if I should cut back on the Thanksgiving Cactus; well, I did, and very hard too. You can see in the center of the pot where a large branch broke off due to the weight. I was afraid it would do the same with what was left. I pinched back every stem to about a foot, mind you the branches were almost 2 1/2' long.

Since I pinched it back, new buds have formed and it is going to be full of blooms again this month. I rooted a few of the tips and have a small container doing fine in my bedroom window.

The blue pot had a tall ginger plant in it but the stems all turned brown and died back. I left the ginger bulbs in the pot and water it lightly hoping it will send up new shoots. The Blue Fern on the floor seems a bit pale just like the Fig.

Now that I used an all-purpose water-soluble fertilizer on all the plants I'm hoping the leaves will darken up again.

This is the only plant that never shows any signs of neglect. It has grown so much in the two years since I bought it. I can see a lot of new stems growing from the center of the plant. I will have to research how to trim it or perhaps divide it. It is getting too large for the space that I have. This south-facing room gets full sun all day long and the plants love it.

It's mid-February and I am busy seeding trays of vegetables, herbs, and flowers for this year's season. I wish you a wonderful week ahead and happy gardening.

Until next time, this is Sunscape

Than you @qurator for supporting my posts.

Indoor plants are an issue, you have to place them well and take care of them according to each of their needs, but although some of yours are not perfect, I have loved the fern, I love these plants, but the only one I have I had to lower it to the gardens here at home was filled with cochineal.

I agree, each plant needs specific needs, but I treat them all the same. lol They have to learn to tough it out. ♥

I'm auditing plants and seeds and looking forward to the start of the new garden season 🙂

Good for you @torem-di-torem I just did all my cold-hardy seeds this past two weeks and they all sprouted. Now I am doing the flowers and herbs that take the longest. My plant shelves are already full of trays. Yikes!

This year I've done much better about keeping the plants watered and fed. In fact, today my helper friend and I water house plants. I have a couple blooming, the begonias and the geraniums. Oh, and the the peace lily has 2 flowers.

The hard time for my plants is during the farm season, as I often am too tired to deal with them. That's when I lose some.

I can understand that. I bring all my plants outside during the summer or I would certainly kill some of them. It's nice watering with the hose on the porch and they get a good amount of shade which keeps them from getting sunburnt. I have to reseed onions and eggplant today as I had poor germination. My plant room is full already so I hope it warms up soon so I can get the greenhouse ready. Hope your feeling better.

I was never good at taking care of indoor plants, with the issue of natural light, watering, growth and then not knowing where to transplant them, but your plants look good, it shows that you have good knowledge, plus they look very nice in those corners 😍

Thank you, @elbuhito I do my best to care for them but sometimes I wait to long to fertilize my babies. Oops. Happy gardening.

7’ tall?? That’s amazing. How long did the cuttings take to root? I want to have Fiddle leaf at some point but not now since I also am neglecting the other plants 😭

Sometimes I feel a lil guilty. There you guys are making extra effort for plants to grow well like Boston Fern for example. Here I just see them everywhere outside and even giant pothos and rubber trees! Sometimes just growing wherever they can. Yet I still manage to kill some of them haha.

Think I need to change the soil from cocopeat to actual soil from now on since cocopeat dry sooooo quick since the plants are now exposed to more sun and growing long already.

Best of luck with your garden.Hi @hiddenblade, The Fiddle leaf took about 2 weeks to start showing roots. As you can see, my plants were showing signs of neglect and lack of nutrients. I live in western, New York and tropical plants only survive in the house. I love tropicals but only have room for a few. I know that Cocopeat is more on the acidic side and perhaps you need to neutralize the soil a bit to help the plants take up more nutrients.

You have a nice collection of indoor plants.
Cool to see you are also doing plant propagation.
I'm trying that myself too.
I've recently bought a grow lamp to help my cuttings a bit.
