Summer Blossoms Around the Garden - by Sunscape

This week the flower gardens were alive with color. I believe the heavy rains this past week really benefitted the gardens. Everything seems to have doubled in size and the plants are full of buds.

Weigelia

This Weigela Wine and Roses bush finally bloomed. It lives in the shadiest garden I have and the soil there is not the greatest, very heavy with clay. The plants do not do the best in this garden but manage to live which amazes me.

This is another plant that seems to stay alive, but never really gets any larger from year to year. The name escapes me at the moment, but perhaps one of you will remind me of its name. (I remembered at the end of the post, Filipendula, yay!)

Elderberry

I am hoping that this year this Elderberry bush will give me some berries. I would love to make some syrup from them. This is its third year so I am hopeful.

Wisteria & Clematis Vines

The Wisteria Vine and the Scarlet Clematis that grows on one of my trellises have put out the last of their blooms for the season. I am going to miss the lovely fragrance that wafts through the yard from the Wisteria blossoms.

Butterfly Garden

This is the garden where I plant most of the flowers to attract the butterflies and hummingbirds. I can watch them flit here and there while sitting on my back porch all summer long. It is one of the joys of having gardens. The variety of creatures that enjoy the nectar and the seeds from the plants are so fun to watch.

Below, I took some closeup photos of the many flowers and grouped them together for you all to enjoy.

The Daylilies

I have others in different gardens as well, but they have yet to open so I could not include them here. I did add the red Asiatic lily since she finally opened to my surprise as the beetles were devouring it before I noticed them.

Daisies & Monarda

Who doesn't love to see daisies in the garden scape? They always make me smile when they start blooming. The white Shasta Daisy has tripled in size since I planted it from seed. I did divide it two years ago and now I have three nice clumps to enjoy.

The Scarlet Monarda is the brightest pink flower in the garden. I only wish it would bloom longer, but the heavy rains this week took her out a bit earlier than normal.

Hydrangea

This is the largest Hydrangea bush that I have grown. Below are photos of the various colors on this bush. I do have other varieties but have yet to walk around to photograph them. Perhaps I will have the photos ready for next week's update.

Verbena

This is one of my favorites for hanging baskets and container gardens. The butterflies and bees just love them and I grow them every year from seed.

Zinnia

I am so pleased with the success this season with how well the Zinnias are doing. They are all beginning to bloom this week and the butterflies are all over them.

Last year I lost a lot of them due to the Poppies overtaking the young plants. They ended up choking them out so I did not have many for the butterflies. That was a hard lesson to learn so this year I thinned out the poppies early after planting them.

Salvia

The Salvia and border Zinnias along the front of my house are doing great. I planted three different squash plants behind them and they are sprawling across the entire garden. I am hoping to get a nice variety of squash to put away this fall.

Next week I will take some closeup shots of the flowers that are getting ready to bloom right now. I hope you are enjoying your gardens as much as I am and I will see you again soon.

Until next time, this is Sunscape

Thank you as always for appreciating my posts. Have a wonderful week.

Ah, such a beautiful garden! That hydrangea bush is gorgeous - so full! Do you just enjoy the blooms outside or do you cut them and bring them inside as well? Your salvia look so happy too - do you trim the flower stalks back after they've finished blooming? I got a blue one this year, it's quite pretty, but once the flowers were spent the plant seemed to die back a fair bit. I scraped the seeds into the flower bed in hopes that it'll self-sow more in there, but the remaining plant is pretty piddly. lol
