With this delightful book you can garden with hardly any labour except planting & picking. The Stout System of mulch gardening will allow you to throw away your weeding tools, pesticides, and fertilisers, and will conserve and replenish the soil to make plants thrive like never before. source
Ruth Stout was 76 years old when she wrote this book yet she was at the time single handedly managing a garden which looked like this.
Enough she says to feed herself and a few other people all year round.
The Stout System makes growing our own food infinitely easier with no watering or weeding required.
All one does in essence is add mulch, plant and harvest. (With the addition of one natural fertiliser, indicated below)
Plants will also have a greater capacity for surviving both drought and freezing conditions, the mulch providing moisture in the summer and heat in the winter (from decomposing matter).
As someone who is always looking to reduce the amount of work time involved in feeding myself and my family with quality home-grown food, this book is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Ciao @samstonehill and the @survival-archive ! What a glorious publication, I love it! It made me think of the book 'HOW TO GROW MORE VEGETABLES - *Than You Ever Thought Possible On Less Land Than You Can Imagine, by John Jeavons - do you know of it? If you haven't got it already, it would be a great addition to the list: it speaks to (initial) double-digging, and the French biodynamic method. A very powerful book in terms of minimal work for maximum production.
Well I didn't know about it before but now I do! Have found it online and added to my collection. Looks great :)
Though it feels to me that Ruth Stout's system is more in line with your own, without need for tools or even a compost. And I like this system because it seems to me you only need to dig once, at the beginning. After that you only have one job really, which is to add mulch regularly.
I have just posted an update on this subject in fact.
Think you will enjoy it 🍇
This is quite a comprehensive collection of useful materials! Thanks for putting it together.
I've been mulching because my mom lived near Ruth Stout in the mid 70's and started mulching her own garden. When I started this garden in 1992, I used mulch and have ever since.
