The weather is great at the moment and all the important gardening jobs have been crossed off the to-do list - except for the potatoes. They are finally in the ground and there have been a few technical questions about them. You may be wondering what technical issues can arise with a potato field, and I'll tell you about that: Potatoes produce a great crop if you mound the plants, so the spacing of the potatoes planted by hand had to match the spacing of the designated mounding machine. I'm not entirely convinced myself yet, but we'll see how the potato plants see the light of day. I wouldn't have minded heaping the plants by hand either, but men's toys come first here, and of course minimising effort is important in this field. That's why there's also a high heaving trailer to pick up the potatoes at the end, and that's what I'm looking forward to the most - because I really want to have that old-fashioned feel, where you appreciate what you have and pick up the potatoes by hand. 🌱🥔

Das Wetter ist derzeit großartig, und es konnten alle wichtigen Gartenarbeiten von der To-Do-Liste gestrichen werden – bis auf die Kartoffeln. Diese sind nun endlich in der Erde, und es gab einige technische Fragen dazu. Ihr fragt euch vielleicht, welche technischen Fragen bei einem Kartoffelacker auftreten können, und das werde ich euch erzählen: Da Kartoffeln eine tolle Ernte bringen, wenn man die Pflanzen häufelt, mussten die Abstände der von Hand gesetzten Kartoffeln mit dem Abstand der dafür vorgesehenen Häufelmaschine übereinstimmen. Ich bin selbst noch nicht ganz davon überzeugt, aber wir werden sehen, wie die Kartoffelpflanzen das Licht der Welt erblicken. Mir hätte es auch nichts ausgemacht, die Pflanzen von Hand zu häufeln, aber hier steht Männerspielzeug an erster Stelle, und natürlich ist der minimale Aufwand bei dieser Ackerfläche wichtig. Deshalb gibt es auch einen Hochwühlhänger, der am Ende die Kartoffeln hochholt, und darauf freue ich mich am meisten – denn ich möchte wirklich das Gefühl des Altertümlichen haben, wo man schätzt, was man hat und die Kartoffeln von Hand aufsammelt. 🌱🥔
One half of the field got the Annabelle variety, and the other half got the (neighbour's) variety - I've forgotten the name. But they come from the neighbour, who incidentally has a really great garden and spoils me rotten with delicious things from his own home shop, where he has lots of home-made stuff. I still learn a lot from the neighbours, especially from the lady who still has a natural sense and feel for how the old people used to do things. It's all very special for me because I didn't have any grandmothers or an intact family in general who could have taught me all this. And I am all the more grateful that I can now experience all of this. Germany's future is uncertain, and who knows what I will need all this knowledge and experience for.
Eine Hälfte des Ackers bekam die Sorte Annabelle, und die andere Hälfte die Sorte (Nachbarn) – ich habe den Namen vergessen. Aber sie stammen vom Nachbarn, der im Übrigen einen richtig tollen Garten hat und mich völlig verwöhnt mit leckeren Sachen aus seinem eigenen Hausladen, in dem er lauter selbstgemachtes Zeug hat. Ich lerne noch sehr viel von den Nachbarn, besonders von der Dame, die noch einen natürlichen Sinn und das Gespür dafür hat, wie die alten Leute früher alles gemacht haben. Das ist für mich alles sehr besonders, weil ich keine Omas hatte oder generell eine intakte Familie, die mir das alles so hätte beibringen können. Und ich bin umso dankbarer dafür, dass ich jetzt all das erleben darf. Deutschlands Zukunft ist ungewiss, und wer weiß, wofür ich all dieses Wissen und diese Erfahrungen noch brauchen werde.
