A Sketch of Simpler Times

a scanned doodle I made in the late 80's of our living room

I found this old sketch in a notebook back in the late 1980s. It’s a little piece of my childhood, which I drew with a blue ballpoint pen on my notebook, capturing our living room in all its cluttered but lived in feel. Looking at it now, I can almost hear the sounds of the hum of the stand fan, the crackle of the big, pre-boombox era stereos, and the whirring of my favorite toy racing along its tracks.

In the drawing, there I am in the lower right corner, sketching myself quietly making sure I got all the details before anyone moves. My sister is there too, watching TV on our media center, probably watching one of her favorite shows while the stereos are on the other side. On top of the stereo was my acrobat toy which is battery-operated it has tracks where three little race cars would do roller-coaster stunts. I can still remember the thrill of watching those cars loop and race, their motors buzzing with energy.

The ladder in the sketch led up to the second floor loft where we slept, a little nook that felt like our own world after a day of playing and watching TV. And that little floor plan at the top? Probably my attempt to map out our space, dreaming up how everything fit together in our home.

This drawing takes me to a simpler era, when a fan kept us cool, a stereo filled our living room with music, and a toy race car could captivate me for hours. It is a reminder of how I used to draw back in those days, preserving the wonder of my childhood through a blue ballpoint pen.
