¿Suena injusto a veces?

Hello dear friends, in this short blog I'm going to explain something which if you're not too familiar with, I believe it was shock you to find out.
Here's a question for you
Ever contemplated why some very rich people spend millions of dollars on paintings that, to be frank, don’t seem worth it anyway?
I mean, some of these pieces look like finger-paintings done by a toddler! But here’s the catch: there's more than meets the eye. Let me break it down for you in simple terms.
So imagine this: You’re a billionaire and the taxman wants his share with an $80 million invoice. Ouch, right? However, fret not because there is a sneaky little art world loophole that can save your day.
Firstly, there is what we call “free port”. It’s a super deluxe storage facility type thing where you can keep your artwork without having to worry about problems like tax laws. Therefore, what happens sometimes is that billionaires just buy one painting at about $50 million and then shove it into free port.
This is where the magic happens. They wait for a while then place the painting on an auction platform. Do you know that art auctions can be crazy? Sometimes, these individuals are caught up with enthusiasm and give more money than how much it is worth.
Therefore, when this $50 million painting is sold at an auction, it can easily fetch $80 million or even more. Insane right? Wait till you hear this.
Rather than selling the artwork and paying tax on profits earned by selling it they instead prefer to donate it to a museum. They are bestowed with an awesome IRS tax write-off whenever they make such major donations. Eventually, this keeps them from footing $80 million payment in taxes.
This may seem like pie in the sky but some wealthy are happy to exploit this perfectly legal loophole. Why not? I’d probably join them if I had so much money!
This is where I come in. Although it’s smart, there is something… you know what? …disgusting about it?
The billionaires are just employing art as a tax haven; this does not agree with the real sense of art, does it?
Art is meant for inspiration, thinking and challenging us. However, when transformed into a means for hiding from taxes by the wealthiest individuals, something of its charm disappears.
Again, do you ever think about all those artists who have no other choice but to struggle hard just to earn their daily bread? On the other hand, these famous people pay millions for paintings that they won’t hang on their walls. It sounds unfair sometimes?
I don’t mean to imply that I’m against finding ways on how to reduce one’s annual tax bills creatively. However, if such savings come at the expense of the art world and the artists who create this atmosphere around them, so be it. That’s my boundary line.
I cannot deny the brilliance of this tax loophole, but it still makes me a little uncomfortable.
Perhaps there should be a change in the art world that will not only benefit billionaires.
What an interesting and thought-provoking blog post! It definitely sheds light on a fascinating aspect of the art world that may not be commonly known. It's inspiring to see the creativity and resourcefulness some individuals employ when it comes to navigating tax laws. While the use of art as a tax strategy may raise some ethical questions, it's encouraging that you're pondering the impact on artists and the true essence of art.
