My Go-To Breakfast Spot in Penang
Having visited Penang several times before, I realised I had yet to explore the west side of the island. Determined to experience something new, I set out for a day of adventure. We began our journey with breakfast at Lee Huat Cafe, a local hawker center where time seemed to stand still. Despite the years since my last visit, which was pre-COVID, the prices here hadn't inflated as much as I expected. The familiar sights and sounds of the bustling hawker stalls brought back fond memories of the good old days when we traveled to Penang to expand Steem's influence within the local community together with other members.

Balik Pulau Paddy Field
Our next stop was the Balik Pulau Paddy Field. As we approached, the vast expanse of greenery stretched out before us, reminiscent of the scenic landscapes of Sabah. The fields were a vivid tapestry of lush green, swaying gently in the breeze. Luckily, it was a windy day, providing a much-needed respite from the toasty heat. In the middle of the field stood the intriguing Container Art installation, a unique blend of nature and creativity. The vibrant green of the paddy fields contrasted beautifully with the artistic structure, creating a picturesque scene that felt like a fusion of the natural and the man-made. We wandered through the fields, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere and marvelling at the harmony of art and agriculture.

Unexpected Durian Stop
Continuing our journey, we navigated the winding hill roads, which offered stunning vistas at every turn. The drive itself was an adventure, with the road meandering through dense foliage and revealing glimpses of the sea. Our destination become the Durian Tree House unexpectedly after passing by the entrance, a hidden gem nestled on the hillside. The entrance was steep upwards, but the effort was well worth it. Perched on the hillside with a commanding view of the open sea, the tree house offered a serene escape. We indulged in a quick durian feast, savouring the creamy, pungent fruit while enjoying the fresh air and the quietness of the surroundings. The rich, distinctive flavour of the durian was a true taste of Penang, and the panoramic views added to the magic of the moment.

Meow Meow
Our final destination for the day was the Cat Beach Sanctuary. This unique sanctuary was rumoured to house over 200 cats, each with its own story. As we parked the car, we were greeted by cats freely roaming the area, their curious eyes and playful demeanour adding to the charm. The environment wasn't as well-maintained as other cat shelters, but it was evident that the caretakers were doing their best with limited resources. Some of the cats were skinny, but they appeared relatively healthy and active, eager to interact with visitors. The entrance fee was simply a donation to help support the sanctuary, and visitors were encouraged to bring cat food, medical supplies, or shelter materials. It was heartwarming to see the dedication of the caretakers and the friendly nature of the cats, each one eager for attention and affection.

With our daytime adventures complete, we headed back to rest before planning our dinner. The west side of Penang had proven to be a treasure trove of unique experiences and memorable moments. From the nostalgic breakfast at Lee Huat Cafe to the artistic paddy fields, the serene durian feast, and the heartwarming cat sanctuary, every stop had offered something special. It was a day filled with discovery, a reminder of the hidden gems that await just beyond the familiar paths.
