Every year-end, as the calendar bids farewell to another year, I indulge in a cherished tradition that has become an integral part of my life. I create the Five Elements Prosperity Bowl—a symbolic representation of fortune, prosperity, and balance for the year ahead. This ritual is a harmonious blend of elements, each chosen with great care to ensure a positive and prosperous new beginning.
The first step is selecting a ceramic bowl of any color, except black, which symbolizes the Earth Element. This bowl serves as the foundation of the prosperity bowl, representing stability and support. Next, I place a layer of cotton inside the bowl, symbolizing easy and abundance throughout the year. This step conveys the message that achieving our goals should come with simplicity and comfort.
The third element is rice, which is carefully spread over the cotton, representing the Wood Element. Rice signifies growth, nourishment, and sustenance. Around the edge of the bowl, I arrange twelve pieces of eggs, a symbol of new beginnings and potential. Alongside the eggs, I place twelve chocolate gold coins, representing the Metal Element and symbolizing wealth and fortune.
To further enhance the prosperity bowl, I roll twelve money notes of any denomination and place them around the bowl. This act signifies financial growth and abundance
throughout the year. The red angpaos, containing a total of 168 units of currency, are also placed inside the bowl. The number 168 holds a special meaning, signifying "Fortune All the Way," while the red envelopes symbolize the Fire Element, representing passion and energy.
At the heart of the prosperity bowl sits a mandarin orange, symbolizing gold and abundance. The entire bowl is then placed on a blue tablemat, representing the Water Element, which signifies fluidity and adaptability.
As a Filipino, the year-end and welcoming of the New Year hold immense significance. This season is seen as a time for new beginnings, opportunities, and positive changes. We prepare luxurious foods, an array of desserts, and twelve varieties of fruits that symbolize good fortune, health, and prosperity for the coming year. It is a time for families, relatives, friends, and even neighbour’s to come together, mending misunderstandings, and rebuilding relationships in the spirit of peace and forgiveness.
Although I am married to a Catholic Malaysian man and live far from my family, I still honour this tradition. We celebrate with my husband's family, but before midnight, we return to our home. It is believed that welcoming the new year in our own house ensures that whatever challenges may come, we can overcome them as a united family.
