Semi urban run turns out better than expected

One of the great things about Chiang Mai is that it is a big city, so that means you have access to all the modern stuff all of us have grown accustomed to, but just a little bit out of the city there is wild and open nature. There is a high amount of national parks here and there is also a lot of agricultural land even though this is one of the most populated areas in all of Thailand. I don't know why it is this way, but it is this way and I am happy that it is this way.

We don't always venture out for an hour on a bus to get to a run and sometimes this can be great and other times it can be a bit too urban.

This recent run was a lot better than we thought it would be and I think we will have to go back there again soon.

You can see best about what I am talking about with the overhead view.

You can see there is a lot going on in this area and if you noticed a place that kind of looks like a water-park, that is exactly what that is. There are some farms in this area and we tend to navigate between them as much as possible in order to both stay off of the crops as well as keep us off the road as much as we can. While this run didn't have as much nature as we would normally have, the reduced time in the bus from around 45 minutes down to about 12 just to get there, was very welcome to all involved.

We did encounter a danger that we normally wouldn't see on these trails, thankfully and that was a snake. Now don't get the wrong impression from this picture. We didn't mean to kill it but just by dumb luck one of our runners stepped on its head and mortally wounded it. We didn't try to airlift it to the veterinarian or anything, but it was clear that this windey fella wasn't going to make it. It was still kind of scary to us though and even though we are normally much further out in the jungle than this location was. I'm kind of surprised that we don't encounter snakes more often than we do actually because some of our runs have us really deep in the jungle.

It isn't terrible to be in a semi-urban environment and it is ok every now and then. It does kind of remind us about how lucky we are to be in the location that we are in. The other active Hashes in Thailand such as Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket likely have to run on roads for every single run because there really isn't any nature left in those places. Perhaps we have gotten too fussy over the years.

Once again everyone is welcome to come and join us. Currently and as far as I can see into the future we are doing runs on Monday (men only), Thursday (mixed), and Saturday (mixed.) Full details are available at our official and poorly made website

On On!

Chiang Mai is a great city to visit. My friend used to visit there when she was living in Bangkok and I heard a lot of great stories from it!

I have often wondered why you guys never encounter snakes and it must be because you make so much noise and vibrations that they have a chance to get out of your way first. I know if I went for a run or a walk in the bush here I am guaranteed to come across something.
