wouldn't your water collection thing get backed up in a truly huge downpour? I suppose it would just overflow over the side. I also presume that your bathroom floor has another drain in case of overflow inside. As long as the weight of backed up water doesn't rip the guttering off the building, I think it is a great design and who doesn't love free water?

Luckily it is imperfectly designed the right way. Excess water overflows on the toilet side of the basin, not the side with the washing machine and electricity, thankfully. There is an exit drain where the wall meets the floor, and I am surprised the water actually flows towards the drain, a true rarity in Cambodia. The only problem is there is no tap at the lowest point of the basin, so if we ever want to drain it we have to pump the water out.
