Discovering Ancient Wonders at Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur

I decided to take a quick trip to Kuala Lumpur and I was looking for things to do. Typically, I enjoy visiting historical sights or natural wonders. Lucky for me, there was a place to visit that checked both of those boxes. That place was the Batu Caves, which feature large caves with ancient temples inside. Even better yet, it is conveniently located on the northern outskirts of the city.

When you get to the temple site, you will walk down a road with many sellers and shops on either side. There are many tourists and worshippers around, taking pictures or gathering offerings to bring to the temple. The main temple is located within the main cave, which is 272 steps up from the entrance. At the bottom of the mountain is another temple, with many colorful altars, paintings, and monkeys!

Walking up the stairs is admittedly a bit tiring, especially if the day is as hot and humid as it was when I was there. You are cheered on up the stairs by the many happy monkeys, who enthusiastically trade photoshoots for food. The stairs are also painted in a rainbow color, which does make for a cool photo.

At the top you are greeted by a few more shops selling various snacks and offerings. The cave opening and ceilings are very tall, and you must now go down stairs to go deeper into the cave. There is another colorful temple running along the side of the cave, and you can see light coming into the cave near the end. It is not a very deep cave, and you could probably walk in and out within 20 minutes. That being said, the air is cool and there are lots of interesting little details in the cave that are worth sticking around to enjoy.

Getting back into the city is easy enough, as there are many cab drivers waiting by the entrance, and the highway is not far down the road.

Overall, I found this to be a nice little point of interest to visit if you ever find yourself in Kuala Lumpur. It is not a large place, and can easily be enjoyed in under two hours.

All photos were taken by myself. Thank you for reading!

I went to this place something like 20 years ago. That large statue at the front was either just being built, or was being refurbished at the time I go there. One of the reasons why I remember being there so well is because at the top of the stairs in the cave there are monkeys and one of the people in our group got a little too cozy with them and the monkey attacked her. This would end up being the first of many instances in my life with monkeys that have lead to me absolutely loathing them as a species.

Wow its very nice place, but 272 steps oh so tiring, maybe i cant breath walking ud and down around the temple.

It was definitely strenuous, and unfortunately there is really no good place to sit and take rest on the stairs. The stairs themselves were actually quite dirty as well, so you probably wouldn't want to sit on them either. That being said, inside the cave there are benches, and the air is nice and cool, perfect for catching one's breathe.

Oh my, that's a popular place. I've seen some posts of that place and the statue is really big indeed!

Yeah, it seemed like a popular place to visit. It had a good mix of locals and tourist visitors. Luckily, the cave is quite spacious, so it did not feel that crowded.

Wow!!

Wow is exactly how I felt when I got to the top of the stairs and first looked into the cave. It was really quite magical with the light coming in through the roof.
