RE: A word to TEFL teachers in Asia: It gets easier

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY2 months ago

I went in with a wonderful plan to inspire and command respect from my students on day one and that plan lasted all of about 8 minutes before I had to just wing it. Once you understand that everything you know about education that exists in the west doesn't apply over here at all, you start to learn what DOES apply and that makes it easier. For one thing you have to stop trying to be their friends, you are their leader and being this leader sometimes involves being a teensy bit cruel to all of them.

Yes being cruel would work for me lol as I do not have a hell of a lot of patience. The kids today I expect are a nightmare especially in the West and in the East you would possibly expect more behaved kids.

I would imagine that there is a lot more respect for authority over here and the kids are not ever attacking teachers. However the teachers that get the most calm and quiet out of the kids are generally the most ruthless and least fun. While I do not do this myself out of fear or reprimand, the old-school Thai teachers still have corporal punishment that the students expect.
