🙈 Monkey-B Got Stuck In The Loft 🆘 While I Was Making Curry Leaf Podi 👨‍🍳

While I was making some curry leaf podi, the youngest member of the construction crew got herself stranded in the ladder-less loft.

Project Staircase 🪜

My wife and her brother have been collecting rocks on and off for a few days, all to be used in this concrete step which will receive the mini staircase from the new porch. Along with this staircase, the guys have also been building a ladder to climb up to the loft.

Around the corner, Puu Mab was busy cutting wood for the staircase, ladder, and also his project of the day, a guardrail for the steps of the main entrance to the cabin. I could envision somebody a little intoxicated possibly forgetting to left at the bottom of the stairs and walking right off the edge, so this is a welcome safety measure.

Curry Leaf Podi 🌿

I am a lover of podi (aka gunpowder), basically a powdered answer to Indian chutneys and pickles. I usually make my podis from roasted peanuts and/or yellow dal. A recent big haul of curry leaves gave me a chance to try out a curry leaf podi recipe.

To turn the leaves into a dry powder, I had to wash and dry them on a towel before dry roasting them in the wok. I dry-roasted some cumin seeds, coriander seeds, and peppercorns too, all ingredients that would eventually become one in a ground powder.

Technical Difficulties 🧗‍♀️

While I was just about to grind everything into a beautiful fragrant powder, I got news that Monkey-B had stranded herself in the loft. The ladder isn't finished yet, so even though she got up there with some help, apparently she refused to let anyone else help her down other than good ole' Dad. I was honored to know I'm worth keeping around for more things than my delicious podis, so I rescued Monkey-B and made my way back to the kitchen.

Back To The Podi 🍚

After returning to the kitchen, I found all the roasted ingredients had cooled enough to grind, so I began doing so in small batches, and jarred the results, but not after sampling the product with some hot rice.

Here is an closeup shot of this beautiful green gunpowder. I liked the flavor of this podi, but chose not to make this a recipe post because I need to like something first before sharing it with others. I will make a few small alterations to the recipe, and in the future I'll share my improved curry leaf podi recipe with you all.

Am imagining how to make the Podi myself although I am not the curry spice type. It's a bit hot and sharp for the tongue. I remember myself when I was in Bangkok, all the food offered along the street were all hot and I had to pass on those food, hahaha.. how can they eat too hot food like the Indians.
Monkey B, there she goes again..very adventurous!

Haha, even Cambodians shutter when I mention Thai food, most Cambodians think it's just too spicy and bold. I love spice though, and Thai/Indian are among my favorite cuisines. If you give podi a try, you could always halve the spicy ingredients and produce a more mild product. Peanut podi with tamarind is nice, a little sweet and sour with a hint of spiciness.

Who knows, I might try the mild one.... I would have to ask the Asian Store owner, he is Indian ....

Would be interesting to see your results. I've never seen podi sold in stores before, I've always assumed because they're not as popular condiments as chutney and pickles. If the store owner is from south India, he might even have family recipes for podi he can share with you, especially a mild one that will jazz up your food without burning your tongue.

Okay I am sold on this gunpowder. If my local Indian run grocer has curry leaf I am so making a batch if this. Curry leaf may or may not be available around here. I'll just skip it than. Podi seems like a magical thing to have around.

I'm glad Monkey B was safely rescued.

Sometimes you could even find them at a SE Asian grocery too, although they certainly aren't used in SE Asian cuisine as much as Indian. Google "Indian podi recipes" and you will enter a world of crunchy deliciousness. My top two are still peanut podi and lentil-roasted garlic podi.

There is a saying that says that "a girl's first love in her life is her own father". And yes, in your post this time the facts do prove the saying is true my friend 👍👍

Me and Monkey-B do have a special bond and similar quirky personalities. We are definitely buddies.

So Monkey B isn't monkey enough to climb down herself. It doesn't seem that high. I think she just wanted to be held in her dad's strong loving arms. Enjoy it while it lasts ;^)

I think a little bit of both are true, plus she's been dropped by some other people before, so I think she only trusts in my strength. Good to know at least one person in the world feels I am Superman 🦸.

You are a dad of many talents. From rescuing damsels in distress to making and grinding your own spice mixes. Hero Dad, right there.

Haha, yep, just replace the "podi grinding" with "horseshoe repair," and we have a classic wild west tale.

Powder makes perfect curry sir. Especially grid with herbs and pepper. Haha kids do have many things to explore during their young age.

I love most to mix the podi with a bit of oil and enjoy it on steamed rice. Perhaps one day we'll enjoy podi in the loft when the ladder is complete.

with some fish sauce for extra taste as well sir.

That gunpowder now makes me thinking of getting sweet potatoes, sliced them into fries. After frying, use this gunpowder to to season it 🤤

Well, I can testify it is delicious sprinkled aloo dum, basically glorified french fries in sesame gravy. I must admit though that peanut podi is still my favorite.

daw, that's a nice feelign that she was willing to let you rescue her! Sometimes nothing beats "dad".

Yep, made my day, but I didn't tell anyone about this ego superboost 😅.

"... even though she got up there with some help, apparently she refused to let anyone else help her down other than good ole' Dad"

awww... This is so sweet! This is precious, that she wanted only you to rescue her! 😊

Made me feel like a superhero for a brief moment.

The ladder isn't finished yet, so even though she got up there with some help, apparently she refused to let anyone else help her down other than good ole' Dad. I was honored to know I'm worth keeping around for more things than my delicious podis, so I rescued Monkey-B and made my way back to the kitchen.

Super Dad Justin to the rescue! hahahhahaha

I felt exactly that when I was called to the rescue. Normally I'd be bothered to step away from work for a moment, but to be SuperDad for a moment.

Being superdad is the best job!

Wow, i wonder what curry podi test like, nice job.

The curry leaves podi is full of flavor, a little bitter, but it comes alive when it hits hot rice.

Podis are very tasty, and I love to have a few sitting on the dinner table to spice up any boring dish.
