A year has passed since we rescued "Pirate" the stray

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITYyesterday

We help a lot of dogs in the Krabi area but every now and then one of them has a personality that is so memorable that everyone has a fond recollection of them. Pirate was one of those dogs. Despite being emaciated when we found him, injured in one of his legs, and having a horrible infection on his head that resulted in him going blind in one eye, he still was happy to see us and would cuddle and give us kisses when we would get near him. He was a special case, and we are delighted to find out that he is doing well in his new home and his loving attitude and trust for humans only seems to grow.

This was Pirate when we first encountered him. He is clearly starving and needed help badly. How people around him in this area could simply ignore a dog that is struggling this much is just beyond my ability to comprehend that sort of lack of empathy especially since when we approached him he exhibited zero signs of aggression. We were still apprehensive to get to up close and personal with him at this time though and to everyone else out there, it is a BAD idea to start to stroke or pet or worse, cuddle or hold a dog that you do not know that lives outdoors. Dogs can react to things very violently even if they appear to be friendly. It took weeks before we felt comfortable handling Pirate even though he gave us no reason to believe that he wanted to hurt any of us.

He arrived in our care on December 4th of 2023, by the time Christmas rolled around he was comfortable enough with us to allow us to put a little Christmas outfit on him. You can see already that his condition has improved a lot and when I took this picture he had already put on 4kg of very much needed weight.

Pirate got a long-term foster care offer from a local who is a very compassionate dog-lover. This is what he looks like today.

The difference is astounding isn't it? He is so healthy and well looked after that he is getting close to being a bit overweight. Hopefully all the memories of starving and being sick and ignored on the streets are fading away and I am sure that every day is a joy for him. He even has a little friend named "Cookie" that he hangs out with every day.

As we are told, he and Cookie are basically inseparable and they spend all day, every day together playing little games and just relaxing in the sun. What an incredible turn-around.

Unfortunately, for every "Pirate story" that we have there are dozens of stories with sad endings. It isn't often that we are able to find adopters or foster care volunteers for the many many dogs that we interact with on a regular basis. But we need to celebrate our little victories like this one. Pirate will live the rest of his life in relative luxury and he has taken to his new home wonderfully.

If you are in a position to help dogs in the area that you live in please do so.

Pirate lookinh so handsome and healthy, I am so glad he found a home. And yeah, how I wish every stray dogs can find a new home where they will never get hungry or get hurt. But reality is so much harsher, there still a lot of people who doesn't like dogs. 😟😟.

I’m glad that Pirate is looking healthy and happy in his new home. ☺️

I remember the post abut Pirate and happy to see he is off the streets and in a foster home. Yes I am sure the percentage of happy endings is very small, but at least they are still happening and that has to be considered a big win.
