Getting a nighttime callout for a dog injured by a car

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY2 months ago

Night or day, Krabi Animal Welfare is always looking out for the poor dogs and cats of the world. Dogs getting struck by cars or motorbikes is extremely common in Thailand even in lessor populated areas like Krabi. Thankfully in this particular instance a witness to the dog getting hit by a car was aware of our organization and gave us a call to help the dog that had been injured pretty badly by a car. It disappoints me that the driver of the car simply fled away from the scene and didn't help the poor animal at all.

I'm not going to show the gruesome images but this doggo was struck so hard by the car that it removed a lot of his backside and also his tail from his body. This is going to cause problems for him later in life because tails on dogs aren't just for letting us know when they are happy. They use their tails to communicate with other dogs as well as to achieve balance. A dog without a tail will generally have to learn to walk again because they use their tails for counter-balance and navigation, as strange as that might sound.

one thing that makes me happy about this situation is that the community is aware enough of our organization that they looked us up on their phone and called our 24 hour hotline. It is just a mobile phone that someone from our crew monitors day and night. It hasn't rung very often in the past but it is starting to get some attention as more and more people in the community become aware of our existence and what it is that we do here. There is no animal control or public animal safety services in Thailand so if a person is unwilling or unable to take on responsibility for an injured dog on their own, the dog or cat or other animal will likely just be left to suffer and die. This particular dog probably would have survived because aside from the tail being completely removed from its body, the wounds were not really deep enough for the pup to bleed out.

Despite being in pain this little guy was very receptive to being cared for and this is a warning to any good Samaritan out there: An injured dog will normally be aggressive towards people that it doesn't know even if you are trying to help them, so it is better to leave this help to the professionals if you can. Almost all areas of the world have some sort of volunteer organization like our own so I would implore you to seek out the one that covers where you live in the world just so that if the time comes that you will know who you can call for help.

our kennels are not luxury by any means but they are relatively clean, have caring people nearby to provide food and medical care, and this is where this guy is going to stay for a week or two while we help him to go through walking rehab for dogs. I wish we had a home for him to go to after he recovers but in the meantime we have asked the person who called this in to ask around the community with a photo to see if there is an owner that is looking for their pet. I would imagine that there is no owner but sometimes there are caring members of a village that provide food and water that might be willing to help out a bit more than normal because of the special circumstances we have here.

In the meantime this cute and nameless good boy is getting the VIP treatment until he can recover well enough to go back home. With any luck, perhaps there actually is a home waiting for him because if there is not, unfortunately our kennels are already well over capacity and we have no choice but to re-introduce him to where he came from. Hopefully he has learned something from this ordeal and will be more mindful of the streets in the future.

Good job on rescuing the poor dog!
I hope he gets well very soon, so he can go home already. My dog was also hit by a car months ago, and the driver just let him crawl in the middle of the road, with blood dripping on his body and an injured foot. We live just near the road, and when I heard his loud cry, I ran so fast and even cried when I saw him. Luckily, he survived. But it took us weeks to babysit and take care of him until he recovered. Now, he never gets out of the house since the accident caused trauma to him.

Thankfully the dog had you on hand to look after him. Not all dogs are so fortunate. Many dogs, including all of mine, lack any sort of street smarts so getting hit by a car or bike is something that is going to happen eventually. Thankfully your dog has learned his lesson and this can be avoided in the future.

Sad reality most are left to die on the side of the road and the motorist did not care. I have noticed of late quite a few cats and dogs on the sides of the roads killed by the traffic and we do not have a huge stray problem here. People just do not seem to care where there animals are and expect them just to return home.

There are a lot of people in the world that probably feel bad about it, but don't feel responsible enough to actually do anything about it. If the country doesn't have animal control there really isn't anyone to call to take care of it anyway. This is the sad reality for stray dogs in the world.
