Every now and then we encounter dogs that have been treated so badly in their lives that they are almost impossible to approach. Some dogs have lost all trust for anything that walks on two legs because they have been kicked around and chased off by humans their entire lives. Thankfully, this situation is very rare and most of the dogs still have an ability to accept kindness from people. Like this guy for example.
While we have not worked with this dog very much in the past we were told that there was a dog that hangs out in a particular neighborhood, doesn't seem to be part of any pack, and is very friendly. It was pointed out to us that he has a rather extreme parasite infestation but other than that, appears to be very well fed and can be seen wagging his tail all the time.
It amazes me that an animal without a home and who hasn't seen agreat deal of compassion in his life can still be so approachable and friendly. When we pulled our car up he didn't run away from us, he ran towards us and then almost immediately the tail was wagging almost out of control. We still approach animals like this with great caution because we don't know if they will have some sort of "trigger" that will turn them aggressive. But this friendly fella didn't seem to have one of those and just wanted to get some belly rubs.
We didn't need to transport him anywhere but I am quite certain that if we did need to do that, he wouldn't have given us any trouble. We were able to treat him with a spray and an anti-tick medication on the spot and also picked a great many ticks off of him while we sat and gave him treats. At no point did he put up any fight and just kind of let us do whatever we wanted. He also really didn't want us to leave but we have other work to do so sadly, we had to leave him and when we did so his tail stopped wagging and he just watched us leave.
I feel really sorry for dogs like this and wish there was more we could do for them. It's surprising to me that no one has opened up their yard for this friendly fella. I know that I certainly would if I could but I already have 3 dogs that live in my small garden. Maybe now that all the ticks and fleas will soon fall off of him the community there can perhaps provide him with a bit of shelter. It is evident they are already giving him plenty of food, so that is a good thing.

It is amazing how they hold no grudges and can tell if you are a good person or not. Some of the most abused animals are the most loving which is not what you would think.
It's especially tragic when the dog has become so used to abuse that it almost appears as though it looks forward to it. Almost like it is a game to them.

It's always sad that we have to leave them but at least he is getting food, let's hope someone does take a little better care of him once he's looking healthier.
Funny how you never know what their personality will be, these dogs can have very different backgrounds that affect their character and attitude towards humans. There is a pitbull mix in our village that is all muscle, full of scars from fights with other dogs, but it is super timid with people, won't even come near us. I have seen this dog running full sprint down the highway several times while on my way to school. I asked his owner about this, and he said about 4 times a week this does a 30km roundtrip highway journey to see a canine girlfriend in another village.
Well it is good that a dog that aggressive will leave people alone. Even though I love animals I too draw the line at a dog that is a danger to the human, especially children, population.
That's pretty remarkable that the dog makes that trip to go see his girlfriend. That's cute... it's not like he has a lot of other things on his schedule though, is it?
