A Healthier Twist on Sisig Tofu!

Cooking Sisig Tofu (2).gif

I was not a fan of Tofu before, so when my mom introduced tofu to us she just fried it and that's it I wasn't that fan of the taste and my mom always added tofu to her grocery list so I had no choice I am the cook in the house I maybe have to research what recipe should I used to make this Tofu.

Until I discovered this recipe that changed my taste pallet and started liking tofu. The dish I am going to cook it what we Sisig Tofu, which is the healthier version of the famous Sisig here in the Philippines, the original sisig came from some part of pig meat, and pig meat is hella expensive right now, so we go to the more budget-friendly food. LOL

I saw that the ASEAN Hive Challenge "Chef Challenge: Tofu" is the main ingredient and I had my entry with me so I am going to join this week's challenge. I hope you enjoy it! :D

Let's start Cooking!

1.jpg

2.jpg

The first step I am going to do is to fry the tofu, In a hot pan I added about a half cup of cooking oil. Then I added a sprinkle of salt into the oil, which will add a flavor to the tofu.

3.jpg

4.jpg

Another thing is to add a pinch of ground pepper into the oil to add more aroma to the tofu.

5.jpg

6.jpg

When all the spices and condiments are in, I am going to add one by one the tofu in. Let it fry, do not try to move it around with your spatula, it tends to stick to the pan when it is still frying but eventually, it will when it turns golden brown.

7.jpg

8.jpg

When the bottom part starts turning golden brown and not sticking to the pan, it is the sign to flip it over to the other side and do the same thing as I did. When it is ready just let it stay on the side of the pan and let the excess oil out the fried tofu, after that put it onto a clean plate.

15.jpg

16.jpg

When the fried tofu cools down, I cut it in half and cut it into cube size.

17.jpg

18.jpg

It should look like this and set it aside for later use.

10.jpg

11.jpg

Next, I like combining canned tuna with tofu, so what I do first is to remove the oil from the tuna.

12.jpg

13.jpg

In the same pan, I remove the excess oil and leave about 1 tablespoon of cooking oil, and then when the oil is hot enough I add the tuna in.

14.jpg

19.jpg

I let it cook for a minute, after that I added a tablespoon of butter.

22.jpg

23.jpg

Let the butter melt and then mix it, cook the tuna until it turns crispy.

25.jpg

26.jpg

Now that the tuna is cooked, I added the aromatics like garlic and red onion but I left some for the garnish for later. I sauteed them until the aroma smelled.

27.jpg

28.jpg

For this part, I set aside the tuna, and I added 2 tablespoons of cooking oil from the tofu I fried earlier then I prepared two eggs.

29.jpg

30.jpg

Crack them into the pan with oil and mix them with a spatula.

31.jpg

33.jpg

I just cook it like scrambled eggs.

34.jpg

35.jpg

After the egg gets cooked, mix the tuna that I set aside before, mix then until well combined.

37.jpg

38.jpg

After that, I added 2 tablespoons of light soy sauce to the pan. Mix it until well combined.

39.jpg

40.jpg

The next step is to add the fried tofu and I add about 4 tablespoons of oyster sauce or when the tofu is well coated.

42.jpg

43.jpg

Mix them until all the condiments are well combined.

45.jpg

44.jpg

After plating it, I added the red onion I set aside and the red chili on the top of the tofu and then I added a tablespoon of mayonnaise on the top.

49.jpg

50.jpg

And then I squeeze a calamansi into the dish and sprinkle a pinch of ground pepper on the top.

46.jpg

Wahhlaaa!! Sisig Tofu! Ready to be eaten. Happy Eating everybody! :D

I bought tofu sisig before in a nearby restaurant but I didn't really like it. It is so maumay na walang lasa. Wala naman yong tuna. This one looks yummier than it, I should try making it nalang than buy. Thanks for the recipe. Di rin kami talaga mahilig sa tofu but I like it sa ginisang Upo haha.

Hehehe. Thank tou 😁

So was I! I never liked tofu before, there was no flavor and the texture was funny. I did not get why they make a big deal of me not being able to eat it. This was until I had a wonderful husband who loves to experiment with foods, he also made Tofu Sisig. Much like yours and I must say I enjoyed it tremendously.

I know right~ LOL Sometimes I don't like the one my mom bought from our local market, the one from the mall grocery is better hehehe. That's good to know thanks to your husband now you like tofu too :D

I think it is better to buy from the mall. I think because you are sure of the quality and the way they handled the product. Not to be picky or snotty, I buy fresh vegetables from local market just not the tofus.

Yes I agree to that,😁 yeah for vegetables local market is the best, compare it to the price on malls expensive. Did you try buying tofu on the local market? Because whenever my mom buys one and you stock it on the fridge for the it tastes a little bit sour when I cook it. 😅😂

No I haven't. Where I am from the temperature is very hot especially at noon so it is best not to buy products like tofu from local markets. It will easily destroy the quality product especially if it is not stored publicly and is only displayed out.

Yeah, I guess they only sell it early in the morning. Yeah it is not good idea to buy tofu in this humid temperature

Thanks to this recipe, your taste buds have discovered the amazing goodness of tofu, hhehe... The ingredients for this recipe are easy to find and not expensive. Also, the procedure is not complicated. Adding drops of calamansi at the last part is good coz it enhances the flavor and balances the flavor too, in my opinion. I can eat this without pairing anything with it.

Your welcome, oh yeah thank god for that, all ingredients are really easy to find. Thanks for that 😁. That is true calamansi for the final touch is better. Try it with rice it is delicious.

Yes TOFUlicious! Agree, this one goes well with rice too, or hmmm... how about with beer on a Friday night, just chilling by the beach or just by the terrace... 😀

This a cleaver combination of sisig tufo, because if you just make sisig tufo alone it will be taste out, since got tuna in can this will be perfect, beer na lang kulang, and it will be good to kanin I'm sure.

Thank you 😁 Oo di ko be ang tofu kung fried lang siya, kaya nga pefect siya with tuna! True yan beer na lang ang kulang 🤣 with side na kanin 🤣🤣
