I have been writing about Burnham Park countless times now and I am back again with yet another reason to write about it. Watch the video above if you don't want to read along. Don't forget to subscribe, like, comment and share. I keep promoting my channel because I want to grow my account there so any engagement is much appreciated. Thank you!
Just like this swan boat, I am all alone during my walk in the park, particularly around the man-made lake, which is one of the main attractions at Burnham Park.
I first noticed the color of the lake when we went out last Sunday because we passed by Lake Drive on our way to find a place to eat. I thought there was something odd about it. I didn't realize right away that it was the color of the water that was different.
This photo I took before during one of my walks shows that the water is brown-green in color. The algae in the water are the cause of that. When it rains, soil and mud would be washed into the lake turning the color of the water into a chocolate color.
Yesterday, I decided to go for a walk to take photos of the lake. Because it was Valentine's Day, I took photos of some couples sitting on the benches scattered around the lake and posted some of that on my other social media page just to have a Valentine's Day post. I'm not one to celebrate this day though. Just like any other event I find it too commercialized.
According to this post by the city's page, the change in water color is a biotechnology water treatment where "bacteria-based probiotics continuously enhance the quality of water by improving its Biological Oxidation Demand (BOD) levels..."
The lake does look better and more pleasant to the eyes as compared to the previous color. Aside from the color, the dead algae also give off an unpleasant odor of decay.
The lake's color now gives better contrast to the colors of the boats. Maybe it is something new to the eye that's why it looks more vibrant but so far, I am liking it and appreciating it more.
Tables fitted with chessboards are still around the park. I kept forgetting there is one by the lake. You can still find some of these tables somewhere in the park.
I was almost at the end of my walk, just a few more steps to come full circle from where I started my walk, when I saw these colorguards/flag twirlers/pep flags in a boat slowly making their way to the center waving and twirling their flags as they go.
I thought it was a wedding event but turns out it was a program for the lake. They were having a dry run on how the program should go. I had some minutes to spare so I stayed for a bit and took some clips while they practice.
The main program will not start for another 30 minutes so I left. By then, most boat rentals had to stop accepting boat renters not until the program was done.
The biking lane between rose garden and the lake was lined with shops for the market encounter. I did make a quick look and took some photos there too but I'll save that for another day.
Much has been said and is being said about this lake regarding its effects on aquatic resources. Some were asking how long will the city sustain this? For now, tourists and locals are welcome to enjoy the aesthetic look of Burnham Lake.
