What are these?

Buns. Why are they yellow? The filling inside is yellow.
Salted egg custard buns. The best custard buns are those with quasi solid fillings.

LAO YANG CAFE

Huge open air spaces, lots of car park. Tip for finding an affordable eatery here in Miri city. Go for those non air-conditioned shops where prices are usually less.

Dim Sum - popular breakfast choice

img_20211110_102128.jpg

Smart tactics to display Dim Sum in a clear food warmer. Imagine your walking in hungry, "OH! boy, my stomach tells me something!"

Then there they are Dim Sum. Just like snacks on display.

PLANTS

img_20211110_102200.jpg

Lot of plants displayed in the middle of the cafe on racks. The ceiling here are high, better heat dissipation. I've been to shops with low ceilings and stalls along the wall and tables next to them. You feel as though your in a sauna room.

My wife and our very long table

img_20211110_102211.jpg

This is one long table. The space between one table to another is about a couple of metres apart to curb Covid.

More plants

Racks with plants. Fresh air. There have been instances where while I was in an air conditioned room, I could hear what the next table's conversation was which is sometimes pretty annoying. In an open air place, the sound vibrates everywhere reducing any amplification of sound. Terrific.

Different stalls

In Miri, most of the time, families come here to eat together for breakfast. Friends meeting up, couple dating and etc.

High ceilings

img_20211110_102309.jpg

Making it more spacious which is one my favourite features of any cafes, restaurants.

Our drinks

img_20211110_102515.jpg

Tea with Milk and sugarless Coffee with milk

If the coffee had sugar, here it is usually a couple of tablespoons. Not a good idea on a long term. Initially, when I started off drinking coffee without sugar a couple of years ago, it was a bit tough. But after a couple of years, I just got the hang of it.

Siomai / Meat wrapped in Wonton skin

img_20211110_102531.jpg

A very popular chinese dumpling. The difference between a meatball and a siomai is that meatballs usually have its meat minced to small little bits. For the Siomai, the meat is usually diced using a knife and marinated. It is chewy....

My wife enjoying her food

img_20211110_102644.jpg

We did not order a lot. Just enough to get some fuel in the body. Enough to keep the engine running.

Salted egg filled custard buns

img_20211110_102651.jpg

One of my favourite buns. Not easy to find in the city. Only available at places that sell Dim Sum.

The inside

img_20211110_102920.jpg

They over steamed the buns. The properly steamed custard bun would be quasi solid where when your pressing on the buns, you can't press it too hard and it will make a mess on your hands as you take a bite. The yellowish cream flows uncontrollably down the fingers.

FRIED YAM WITH MEAT

img_20211110_143310.jpg

Crispy fried yam, marinated meat in the middle
Crunchy on the outside. Juicy and chewy on the inside.

Eating Dim Sum feels a bit like eating desserts.

Macro shot of the plant

img_20211110_104054.jpg

While chewing food, I took my phone and decided to snap some macro photos.

Another view of the cafe. Clean. and we were about to leave.

img_20211110_104842.jpg

10 a.m - most of the tables have emptied out.

ECONOMY RICE

img_20211110_104901.jpg

While I was walking out, I took a picture of their Economy rice section. Lot of choices to choose from. One plate cost around RM 6.50 / USD 1.60

Parking Lot

Like a showroom. Free parking. We were heading off.

I have only ever been to Malaysia/Singapore on few weeks trip, but the food court system in these countries needs to be repeated all over the world. I have seen food courts all over the world, and while there may be certain similarities, there is never the variety, the history, the soul, and the design like in Malaysia/Singapore.
