Sunday Morning, Rainy Morning: Embracing and Walking Through the Early Rain

Blog covers.jpg

Hello, Hivers! It's makiyumee here and I'm back with another blog! It's been raining a lot these days, I hope y'all are alright there in your respective homes. Finally, September's here. I'm going to get my blanket and wrap myself under the sheets since it's cold outside. Just wake me up when September ends—just kidding, I was only quoting Green Day's song.

Anyway, enough with Green Day (though I really love that band and their music) let's get to our blog for today now. So yeah, it was a Sunday morning and rain was falling but I had no one to steal some covers to and share some skin with (Sunday morning by Maroon 5 this time haha) because I was sleeping alone under the cold air of the storm. I got out of bed and took a bath even if the water was cold.

After taking a bath, I changed into some comfortable clothes before saying goodbye to my parents and then leaving the house to go to Medellin. My mother gave me a quick errand to run which was why I went to Medellin. I took the bus and when I arrived to Medellin, I quickly did what my mother told me to do before going back to our house.

When I got back, I went straight to the kitchen to prepare the rice and then cooked it on top of the fire. I changed back into my home clothes before going back to our dirty kitchen to check on the rice. On my way, I stopped when I saw this little spider curling on top of a leaf. It's spider season now (char, spider season? Haha), what I meant is that there are a lot of spiders coming out and living in the leaves of the plants because of the cold season.

During the peaceful hours of the night, I used to frequently lie in bed and gaze up at the ceiling. It wasn't easy, but I attempted to take it easy. When I thought I was going to fall asleep, our dogs' barking would interrupt my trance and force me to wake up. Their harsh, loud barks echoed throughout the night, as though they were trying to alert us to a problem. I would get out of bed gradually and make my way to the window. My eyes would adjust to the darkness outside as I looked through the curtains. I could see the dim, flickering beams of flashlights moving around in the distance, across the field that surrounded our backyard.

I wasn't sure what they were searching for at first. The men appeared to be concentrated on something minor but significant as they cautiously and silently made their way across the field. After observing, I came to understand that they were looking for spiders—specific spiders that would bring a high price on the market. Though it made sense, the idea itself startled me as well. The men's outing in the middle of the night to hunt for these spiders made sense if they were important.

The rain continued to pour, and I decided to look around our house to check the damages. As I walked, I saw our front yard already looking like a swimming pool…for frogs. It was raining pretty hard last night and also the lightning was a bit alarming to the point that we had to cover our appliances and turn off all our lights. My mother feared that if we use too much electricity, the lightning might accidentally hit our house.

I noticed that I was slowing down and looking more intently around me as I strolled in the light rain. Small, shining beads of water stuck to the edges of the leaves as the rain fell steadily yet lightly. The need to stop and process everything overcame me. I saw how the droplets collected on a flower's petals, giving them a little jewel-like glitter. The scene was so fragile and lovely that I grabbed my phone out of reflex, hoping to freeze this moment in time.

I took out my phone and carefully took a picture of a single drop of rainfall resting on a leaf's end and a few branches, its surface reflecting the small world around it. I took the picture just in time, even though the raindrop was trembling a little and looked like it would disappear at any moment.

When the rice was finally cooked and the fragrant steam filled the kitchen, my sister finished preparing the viand that we would have for breakfast. The smell of the food made my stomach growl, and I knew it was time to eat. We all sat down together at the table, ready to enjoy our meal.

As we ate, savoring the warm rice and the tasty viand, my mother told me that she wanted me to go to Bogo this time to buy some groceries and so I did. Even if I had other plans in mind like finishing some of my assignments, I know that buying groceries were a top priority since we needed the food and other necessities every day.

The journey to Bogo was familiar to me, and I made my way there without any trouble even if the rain was pouring so hard. Once I arrived, I went straight to Gaisano, the store where we usually bought our groceries. I took out the small sheet of paper that my mother had given me earlier. It had a list of all the things she needed. I carefully read through the list, making sure I didn't miss anything, and began to walk through the aisles of the store, picking up the items one by one.

After filling my cart with everything on the list, I headed to the cashier, paid for the groceries, and packed them into bags. With a sense of satisfaction, I knew I had done exactly what my mother asked.

The rain was still pouring non-stop when I got out of Gaisano but I still managed to hire a tricycle that parked outside Gaisano and went home with all the groceries that I had bought. That would be all for this blog, I hope you had fun reading my Sunday experiences. See you all on the next one, my dear Hivers!
