Indigenous Peoples Month: If others can achieve it, we can achieve it too!

October marked the month-long celebration of indigenous peoples. This program was started in response to indigenous students' legal entitlement to a contextually relevant education. Regarding their identities, knowledge systems, competencies, and values that are significant to them and the rest of their legacy, it respects them and works to advance them.

I have been a teacher at an IPED school (Indigenous Peoples Education) for almost five years. Teaching in a remote place has not been simple for me; it has been really difficult and thrilling. However it may be difficult for me to teach them while taking into consideration their culture and adapting to their traditions, I will never regret the time I spent here, and I will always be honored to be one of our government's distant schools teachers.

Indigenous Peoples Month If others can achieve it, we can too!.png

Last Month, in October, we celebrated our Indigenous Peoples Month. We created a program for our Indigenous students to give their day some significance.

One of the program highlights is the pageant of their cultural costumes among the chosen students in all classes. As our Indigenous students enter the gathering and proudly wear their costumes, we are astounded by their distinct beauty.

They were walking when I suddenly realized how grateful I am to teach these lovely people living in remote mountain places. I constantly encourage children to take pride in their beauty because there are times that they feel ashamed to socialize with people due to living in a secluded area and the discrimination they face from society.

Teachers also dress in Indigenous or cultural costumes to make our Indigenous students feel included and supported.

We also give them a chance to show off their skills, particularly in dancing, to energize the program's centerpiece. Their faces really convey how delighted they are doing what they are doing, and they are excellent dancers.

The judges of the said activity start judging them when they have finished dancing using the established criteria. While waiting, Lisa, one of the indigenous community representatives, gave everyone a motivational speech.

We are pleased to learn from her speech that she is living proof of how an indigenous person can study, graduate from college, and have a degree. After achieving success, she returned to her community and decided to help her tribe.

She says, "If others can achieve it, then we can achieve it too!", and some of our students and parents become emotional.". In addition, she acknowledged in her address that many indigenous people are hesitant to leave their comfort and security because they see themselves as distinct from the residents of the town proper. They feel embarrassed to interact with others since they are poor and live in an uncivilized world; the reason why that many of them never completed higher education.

We were immensely touched by her advice to "Never be scared to dream and soar high, even if poverty hits us so hard." Her motivational speeches delight the people in the crowd. Everything she said was true: their poverty will never stand in the way of their success.

We are extremely happy that she inspires our Indigenous students to value their education. She makes them understand that education will be their best tool for achieving their goals. Education will be their key to improving themselves to be better in the future; at that time, they won't ever feel embarrassed or afraid to interact with others because they understand that everyone has the same access to education and good quality of life.

Following the motivational speech, the much-anticipated announcement of the winners is ready. They are all winners in our eyes and deserving of recognition, but in a contest or competition, only a select few will be chosen.
By the way, the candidates are divided into two groups: the primary levels and the intermediate levels.

I am proud to represent to you, the primary level contestants:

From Grade 1, Andrea and Zoren:

And the winners are:
From the primary levels: Edrian and Lucy, who are in third grade; Malay and Boyboy, who are in my advisory class's fifth grade.

I am grateful because, as their adviser, I became more proud of my Grade 5 pupils who were selected.

We paid for the prizes for all winners and, of course, the consolation prizes in order to thank them for their participation and efforts and to make them happy.

They cannot hide their excitement when we call their names on stage and they receive their prices.

Through these activities, they have a great chance to develop their abilities and improve their self-worth and confidence. This program is very significant for everyone to understand their worth as individuals and as valuable members of society.

I sincerely hope and pray that our Indigenous students will go on to lead successful lives and be the most excellent versions of themselves in the future.

May the government and good people continue to reach out with open arms and kind hearts to assist and support the people in isolated locations like these. To encourage them to dream and to give them hope despite all the struggles that they have.

These people needed the most help and support.
