It is my best friend's birthday today, so I made something for her. She no longer lives in the Philippines, so I'll be giving her this painting the next time we meet. hahaha
She's someone who really loves penguins. Whenever we went out and she saw some penguin plushies or anything with penguin designs, she'd be so excited and happy. That's the reason why I decided to paint a cute penguin for her.
The penguin I painted is surrounded by beautiful flowers and is holding some balloons to celebrate my best friend's special day. I also painted a beautiful sky in the background. Let me share to you the art process below.
First, I prepared my canvas pad. This time, I just used the A5-sized one. I inserted doing this painting in between my classes. I originally wanted to just use my solid watercolor, but it was a bad idea. This was what happened.
It was so awful, so I covered everything with white acrylic paint. I just made it dry while I did a couple classes.
Once it's dry, I placed some paint for the background which is the sky... then I let it dry again as I did some more classes.
When the background paint dried up, I sketched the patterns for the penguin, flowers and balloons and covered them with white paint.
The background is a bit dark, so I need to start with white in order to make the colors pop.
After painting the main subject, I added some details and highlights. The background looked a bit bare, so I added some white clouds. I used a sponge and a small detail brushh to make it.
After completing the art work, I took out the masking tape around it. There were remnants of the mess I created earlier from the solid watercolor, so I decided to cover it up by adding black paint on two sides and a white line on the same side.
I sent the photo and my greeting to my best friend at midnight even though it's Philippine time. Hahah In her place, her birthday starts in an hour.
