Hello hivers, it's me again toniagurl from the countryside. For a couple of days, the weather is bad, always raining. no sun coming out. Today it seems to be a cloudy day, the atmosphere is quiet and windy,I've heard the breeze of rustling leaves, and the air was fresh and clean. It was a perfect day.
For today's blog I would like to share with you my chayote farm. Chayote also known as sayote or vegetable pear. It belongs to the gourd family which includes cucumbers, melons and squash. chayote is a fast-growing climbing vine that produces a pear-shaped fruit with a green skin and have a slightly sweet flavor. Planting can be done anytime of the year.
First, we had to clean the area were we planting our chayote, we bought tie wire for the trellis. The trellis will support the vines. We hired people for the preparation. While waiting for the trellis to be done we prepared chayote fruit to be matured and wait the sprout grow into 1-2 inches and ready to plant. After one month the vines starts to grow and later on the flowers boom and bear fruits, about 4 months we can harvest our chayote. To maintain the farm, we had to put fertilizer every 15 days or twice a month and took out the matured or dried leaves and vines. Harvest time of chayote is once a week. Our farm is one of our sources of living.
Yesterday my brother helped me pick the chayote fruits, in our town we used large basket, or it is called "bukag" in our town. It is very difficult and heavy carrying our crops here in our town especially if our farm is in mountainous area. My brother put the large basket or bukag in this flat surface and tomorrow someone will take this to the market. Driving motorcycle while carrying basket is how we took our crops to the market. For the fare we will give the driver for 100 pesos per basket per ride. And to my brother who helped picked the chayote he will have 20% of the sales once the chayote sold.
There are some health benefits of chayote:
1.provide essential nutrients such as vitamin c and zinc
2.promote blood sugar control
3.improved liver health
Chayote is a vegetable in our Province but technically it is a fruit, there are so many ways how to prepare dish with chayote. It can be eaten raw like you would eat cucumber, chop it by cubes to mixed into vegetable or fruit salads.
Thank you for your time and reading my post. Have a great day to all. I have more stories to tell. See you next time.
