Hi everyone! Today I am going to share about a famous noodles in Malaysia. It is squid noodles and this meal was invented the first time here in Penang, Malaysia.
This is the area around the restaurant. It is near The Esplanade which is located in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia. I am not going into much details as that will make this post seem like I'm piggybacking on the previous post which is about the historic location. Feel free to read up more on it if you like.
This is little poster of the restaurant so people know its nearby. It says Hameed Pata, the creator of Sotong Mee of Malaysia (Squid Noodles). It has been operating from 1978, which amounts to 47 years. That is a very long time right! There are also details of the timing where it says that the restaurant opens from 11.00am to 8.00pm from Monday to Saturday. The eating outlet closes on Sundays every fortnight. So I am guessing there will be two Sundays every month where the restaurant is open.
This is inside the restaurant. It was quite simple like a regular small town food outlet.
My family and I ordered a plate of squid noodles for each and while it was being prepared, we decided to try their dessert which is ABC. ABC is the acronym for Air Batu Campur which translates to mixed iced water. It is actually a famous local dessert made of shaved ice, a few other ingredients such as corn and chocolate chips, and finally topped with a scoop of ice cream. I only took a small bite and left it to melt. It was so refreshing as the weather was extremely warm.
Here comes the noodles. Even the plate says Hameed Pata Mee Sotong. It looked so red and as it was really spicy. However, it was not spicy. Only the colour looked like that and I think it is due to using a special type of chilli powder which is called Kashmiri chilli powder. It usually adds a red tint to the dish that we cook while keeping the spicy taste at a moderate level.
The taste was yummy. They added lots of squids and then topped it off with some fried onion for extra flavour and a sprinkle of spring onions as garnish to add a pop of green colour. It contrasts with the bold looking red noodles. Each plate also comes with a lime so we can squeeze the juice into the noodles for some sour flavour. It goes well with such food and helps to cut down some of the spiciness.
The price of a plate is RM 6.00 and I think it is reasonable as it has squids in it. As we were done eating the main meal, the ABC melted. I ate the ice-cream and then broke the rest of the ice little more so we can drink it with a spoon. By the time I was done, it was as if my lips got a new layer of lipstick because all the red sauce of the noodles formed a layer. But it was alright as I just wiped it off using a tissue paper.

I'd say that your eating experience sounds great, particularly with the reviving touch of ABC to combat the hot weather! And the way you describe this ABC, Air Batu Campur, seems like the ideal treat; its mix of shaved ice, sweet toppings, and ice cream and truly a must-buy for a wonderful balance to the heat along with other foodies. Indeed, food has a fantastic ability to unite people, hence it is waaayyy more fantastic that you could share this experience with your family. The squid noodles must have been as delightful as the dessert!
