One of the questions we get asked the most is whether it's okay to write about something that we wouldn't normally think of as a 'herb'. People might say, well, I was going to write about my home made sauerkraut or the medicinal value of cordyceps, but I wasn't sure if it was allowed in The Herbal Hive.
Let's just start with the dictionary definition.
1 botany : a seed-producing annual, biennial, or perennial that does not develop persistent woody tissue but dies down at the end of a growing season. 2 : a plant or plant part valued for its medicinal, savory, or aromatic qualities planted parsley, basil, and rosemary in her herb garden. - Mirriam Webster
1.any plant with leaves, seeds, or flowers used for flavouring, food, medicine, or perfume.
"bundles of dried herbs"
2.any seed-bearing plant that does not have a woody stem and dies down to the ground after flowering.
"the banana plant is the world's largest herb"
Wait what... Bananas are herbs? Now that's a little crazy but.. doesn't that just open a whole world of what we would love to see in The Herbal Hive?
Let's extend it a little further.. a lot further.
What if we told you we love to read about ANY plant medicines, including mushrooms? Now, if you are writing about GROWING reishi, I'd add the post to the FUNGI LOVERS community and put #herbalism as one of your tags. Many herbal folk would love to read about it. And many herbalists use reishi as a plant medicine, so if you are writing about a reishi TINCTURE, it would fit in either community and we would welcome it for sure.
So whether it's a fruit, berry, mushroom, vegetable or leaf, we would welcome it in our community.
Of course, original content only please! No blurry photos, plagiarism, or single language posts as we don't have time for translators, sorry! And please don't list the medicinal value of, say, bananas... We will likely mute your post. That information can be found anywhere on internet and is NOT original. Think discovery, anecdotal evidence, reference to science if applicable or adding value, recipes and more.. be amazing!
Think of us as PLANT MEDICINE, and you'll be fine.

Nice to know, once we are done with building we'll be happy to share some herbal posts.
Fabulous! Can't wait.
Sorry, what were you saying?
I've got 2 bananas in my ears ;^)
Sometimes bananas in ears is excellent medicine. 🍌👂👂🍌
I agree. The fruit sugar seems to remove ear wax.
not medical advice
Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't really sure of the definition.

Oh yes! I love the clarification, the expansion of this amazing community! Most plants are medicinal plants in a way, so many things to learn! Pure magic :)
Clear as a bell and the clarification incredibly appreciated, @riverflows. 😍
You are welcome. Some wise person suggested we remind the community of what we like to see. Thanks, Artemis!
hehe... I'm some days scratching my head trying to decide between @naturalmedicine @theherbalhive and gardening / plant-based. So much grey in there - sort of like a spring day in Melbourne between 10.17am and 11.43am. 😁
Your choice of coat and boots! Gardening stuff in The Garden Hive, Plant Medicine in The Herbal Hive, but we kinda curate across both if there are spare votes. Natural Medicine follows those trails, but no manual curators there.
@theherbalhive or @riverflows. I recently posted a simple sauerkraut recipe. Although the title might have been deceiving, the content was about more about prebiotics and probiotics and the gut microbiome. It was so funny when I read Sauerkraut in this post. I couldn't have chosen a simpler Sauerkraut recipe, when in fact my post wasn't really about Sauerkraut.
nice post
very useful post
Sure
Hi @theherbalhive there's no discord anymore? I try to get in with the link but I couldn't ☹
