Brazil is huge. We have a vast coastline at our disposal. Seas for all types of tastes and goals. Sea without waves, sea with big, long, tubular, small waves and much more. Therefore, it is normal for the number of water sports practitioners to increase with each passing year.

With the world surfing title won by Gabriel Medina in 2014, Brazil saw this sport become popular and attract new fans. Surfing, which was previously marginalized, saw everything change, its industry grew, thousands of boards were sold and more surf schools were opened.

In this sense, bodysurfing is experiencing a very interesting growth. Since the launch of the television program “Homem Peixe” years ago, part of the Canal OFF programming, bodysurfing has become very popular. Everyone who discovered the TV show, whether intentionally or not, ended up becoming interested in this sport. With his nickname (Fish Man) giving the program its name, Henrique Pistilli, from Rio, made many identify with his life and lifestyle. A lover of the sea and a surfer with body and soul, Pistilli conveyed a lot of charisma and performance on the waves, always traveling the world in search of the best waves.

At that time, mid-2014, many of us were motivated to form groups, organize bodysurfing meetings and develop the sport in some way. In Bahia, bodysurf has always been alive, but the flame was rekindled during the program and today it remains stronger and stronger. Still in 2014, a group called Bahia Storm was founded by Lucas “Shark” Nelli, a champion where every month a meeting on the beach was held, but with the pandemic the activities were paused and now in 2022 it is expected that there will be a resumption.

Another group made up of great athletes, photographers and sports enthusiasts is Pescador Handsurf. This group has been moving the sports scene very well, especially the sport known as handsurfing in Alagoas. Alagoas handsurfing is a type of handsurfing created in Alagoas in the mid-1980s. An extreme and different sport, whose objective for the handsurfer / handsurfist is to perform maneuvers from three sports: surfing, bodysurfing and bodyboarding. Among the most common handsurfing maneuvers in Alagoas are aerial, crash, cutback, el rollo, floater, screw, rip. In fact, even the board/handboard for this sport is different and is called palmar.

With the improvement of the pandemic scenario, the Pescador Handsurf group promoted, in partnership with Handsurf Clube, a Seminar aimed at disseminating Alagoas Handsurf in Bahia. The pioneers of the sport and experienced handsurfers Sivory Farias and Alberto Mariano, respectively President and Technical Director of Handsurf Clube, discussed the origins of the sport, its peculiarities, as well as the rules adopted in judging athletes during the championships.

The fact is that Bahian athletes have been showing a very good level of performance in both bodysurfing and handsurfing, highlighting the strength that these sports have in the state. For Anderson “Cebola”, who covered the event and is part of the Pescador HandSurf Board of Directors, the idea is to embrace the sport at the same time that the community is also embraced. “We want to give opportunities to kids in the community, take children and teenagers out of the marginalization and include them in our sport. There’s nothing better than that”, says the photographer.

In fact, there is nothing more beautiful than promoting sport as a tool for inclusion, education and social transformation. Sport should never be the end, but rather the means to change realities. More than training champions who will climb the podium, we need to think about training worthy people who play a positive role in society, regardless of whether they will become professional athletes or not. Finally, Bahia deserves due recognition for everything it has been doing in favor of bodysurfing and handsurfing, the development of both modalities is inspiring and serves as an incentive for other states to mobilize to do the same.

Aloha, galera!

O Brasil é enorme. Temos um vasto litoral à nossa disposição. Mares para todos os tipos de gostos e objetivos. Mar sem onda, mar com ondas grandes, longas, tubulares, pequenas e muito mais. Com isso, é normal que o número de praticantes de esportes aquáticos aumente a cada ano que passa.

Com o título mundial de surfe conquistado por Gabriel Medina ainda no ano de 2014, o Brasil viu esse esporte cair no gosto e atrair novos adeptos. O surfe que antes era marginalizado, viu tudo mudar, sua indústria cresceu, milhares de pranchas foram vendidas e mais escolinhas de surfe foram abertas.

Nesse sentido, o bodysurf vem em uma crescente muito interessante. Desde o lançamento de anos atrás do programa de televisão “Homem Peixe”, pertencente a programação do Canal OFF, o bodysurf se popularizou muito. Cada um que descobri o programa de TV, fosse intencionalmente ou não, acabava se interessando por esse esporte. Com seu apelido (Homem Peixe) dando nome ao programa, o carioca Henrique Pistilli fez com que muitos se identificassem com sua vida e estilo de vida. Amante do mar e surfista de corpo e alma, Pistilli transmitia muito carisma e performance nas ondas, sempre rodando o mundo em busca das melhores ondas.

Naquela época, meados de 2014, muitos de nós fomos motivados a formar grupos, organizar encontros de bodysurf e desenvolver o esporte de alguma maneira. Na Bahia, o bodysurf sempre esteve vivo, mas a chama foi reacesa na época do programa e hoje se mantém cada vez mais forte. Ainda em 2014, um grupo chamado Bahia Storm foi fundado por Lucas “Shark” Nelli, campeão onde todo mês um encontro na praia era realizado, mas com a pandemia as atividades foram pausadas e agora em 2022 espera-se que haja uma retomada.

Outro grupo formado por grandes atletas, fotógrafos e entusiastas do esporte é o Pescador Handsurf. Esse grupo tem movimentado muito bem a cena do esporte, especialmente a modalidade conhecida como handsurf de Alagoas. O handsurf de Alagoas é uma modalidade de handsurf criada em Alagoas em meados da década de 80. Um esporte radical e diferente, cujo objetivo do handsurfer / handsurfista é executar manobras de três esportes: surf, bodysurf e bodyboarding. Dentre as manobras mais comuns do handsurf de Alagoas encontram-se aéreo, batida, cutback, el rollo, floater, parafuso, rasgada. Inclusive, até a prancha / handboard desse esporte é diferente e é chamada de palmar.

Com a melhora do cenário da pandemia, o grupo Pescador Handsurf promoveu, em parceria com o Handsurf Clube, um Seminário voltado para a disseminação do Handsurf de Alagoas na Bahia. Os pioneiros do esporte e experientes handsurfers Sivory Farias e Alberto Mariano, respectivamente Presidente e Diretor Técnico do Handsurf Clube, abordaram sobre a origem do esporte, suas peculiaridades, bem como as regras adotadas no julgamento dos atletas durante os campeonatos.

O fato é que os atletas baianos vêm apresentando um nível de performance muito bom tanto no bodysurf como no handsurf, ressaltando a força que estes esportes possuem no estado. Para Anderson “Cebola”, que cobriu o evento e que faz parte da Diretoria do Pescador HandSurf, a ideia é abraçar o esporte ao mesmo tempo em que a comunidade é abraçada também. “Queremos dar oportunidade aos garotos da comunidade, tirar as crianças e adolescentes da marginalidade e incluí-las ao nosso esporte. Não tem coisa melhor do que isso”, afirma o fotógrafo.

De fato, não há algo mais bonito do que promover o esporte como ferramenta de inclusão, educação e transformação social. O esporte nunca deve ser o fim, mas sim o meio para mudar realidades. Mais do que formar campeões que subirão ao pódio, precisamos pensar em formar pessoas dignas, que exerçam um papel positivo na sociedade, independente se estas irão tornar-se atletas profissionais ou não. Por fim, a Bahia merece o devido reconhecimento por tudo que vem fazendo em prol do bodysurf e handsurf, o desenvolvimento de ambas as modalidades é algo inspirador e serve como incentivo para que outros estados se mobilizem para fazer o mesmo.
