Over the years the LEGO corporation has made a lot of interesting toys. Some were better than others and some have become very valuable. Over the last 25 years or so they have also been doing special commemorative mini-figures that they give away in contests or raffles to loyal customers. I shared the solid gold C-3PO last time that is valued over $200,000. Today I have another one they made in solid platinum.
Here is the R2-D2 made of pure platinum to celebrate the 40 years of Star Wars. The stated number produced is anywhere from two to five depending on the source. At any rate there aren't very many out there. Currently the price estimate on one of these little mini-figures is around $33,000. Not too bad of a pay day if you happened to win one or come across one by sheer luck. Solid gold LEGO pieces have shown up in Goodwill stores in the past.
What a cool little piece of platinum! Below you can see the original announcement that I assume came from the LEGO magazine which I do not subscribe to and never have. It's probably why I never heard about this or other cool giveaways until they were already over! lol
When I saw that Star Wars logo enclosed in the zero in the 40 it brought back some questions that I have always had about the original image. Back in 1977, the original movie poster for Star Wars A New Hope looked like this:
My question has always been, where in the movie did Princess Leia dress that slutty and where did Luke appear without his shirt with muscles like that? That always bothered me a bit, but even George Lucas understood back then, sex sells....
Back to the original reason for the post of the day... Buying old LEGOs at thrift stores can be very profitable. A lot of times they get in boxes or bins full of them and the last thing the employees want to do is sort anything out so often they just put them up for sale as a lot. Although lately I've been finding some stores that are taking the time to look for expensive items so you have to be a little choosy about what you buy.
I've been sharing some of the finds that have come out of two big bins full of used LEGO's that I bought for $80 at a Goodwill store here in Orange County. My finds have already more than paid for the initial investment, but I've been taking my sweet time with this horde of old LEGOs. Mainly because I've had other things come up that have been keeping me busy. But I did pull out some more nice finds to share today.
I'll need to apologize up front, my lighting is horrible in here today because it's really cloudy outside, so not my best pictures by far. I'll have to get some better lighting before I get some final eBay pictures taken. But there are some decent mini-figures in the lot I have here.
First off this is Skeleton Guy, I figured with Halloween coming up I would throw him in the mix. I have several of these and they usually sell for $8-9 a piece. Not too bad. He comes from the collectible series 14 in case you're wondering where he came from!
Now this next picture just sucks, I need to use a different camera instead of this old phone and get some better lighting. This is from the same series, and is called Plant Monster. I can probably get at least $5 off of this one.
Next up for Marvel fans this is Lego Hawkeye. Again not the best picture, so I'll need to get some much better ones for eBay. He might get me $4 if I'm lucky, Marvel stuff isn't as good to sell as Star Wars....
Speaking of Star Wars, Han Solo should sell pretty well. I should get around $6 for this one, not bad for a common mini-figure.
This one was a struggle with the lighting, but this is Hagrid from Harry Potter. I might get $6 or 7 for this one. Not too bad for being a little scratched up!
Speaking of Harry Potter, here he is. The are just so common you're lucky to get $4 on these. Harry Potter figures usually just don't sell well. Too many were made I guess...
And this little guy isn't too common, he comes from a Costumbix LEGO set and is a power miner. New they get around $10, used maybe $7. That's what I expect to get for it, they are kind of cute little things. The sets were never popular so there aren't many around that makes them a little more valuable.
Because I have already more than earned back my initial investment on the $80, these guys are all profit. Even if I only get $5 a piece that's $35, not too bad. That's probably what I'll get once selling fees are taken out. Not too bad for an hour or two of work. Not quite worth the $33,000 platinum R2-D2, but a profit is a profit and I'll never turn that down!
All of these come with some accessories, small parts that come with them which I've already fished out. I'll put all of those in the final selling pictures, but I just wanted to take a few today to share the kind of money even these common, run of the mill figures can command. You're always safe with Star Wars in my experience, and most big franchise films usually sell well. Harry Potter is the rare exception. There were just too many produced I guess.
That will just about wrap up my post for the day. I hope you enjoyed seeing a few more LEGOs and the awesome R2-D2 made of platinum. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. Thank you everyone for all of your support, it truly is greatly appreciated. I hope you all have a great day!

Hagrid one looks cool and pretty accurate too.
Hagrid is a cool one, he's a little scratched up but it's the first time I've found one of him. So that was kind of cool!

What Lego I find are already picked out.
Looks like I'm up against Professional Thrifters.
That really is the hard part. Some places have pros that show up all the time looking for the new stuff. There is a lot of luck at times, to beat out the pickers!
Very cool! I never would have guessed you could get so much for each individual one. I was thinking they would go in lots or something like that.
Some of the very common ones that's your best bet. I've sold one mini-figure for $130 before, most have a pretty good collector's market.
Wow, that is really cool.
As soon as I read your publication I went to look for a gift that I received in 1998, it was a gift from the daughter of the head of the public accounting department at the university where I worked as a professor, until April of this year. She went on a student exchange to Denmark, and when she came back she brought gifts to her dad's closest friends, even though he was my boss, he was also a good friend, his daughter knew that her dad and I were great friends.
I have had that with me all this time and have not taken it out of his bag.
Never take it out, if you ever decide to sell it that's an extra premium! Very cool gift, they used to make a lot of LEGOs in Denmark, not sure it they still do or not.
!BBH
Well I found out from her that lego was invented there in denmark, in that year in 98 they still had factories there.
Actually I would know for sure if they have the factories in Denmark, but with this globalization I assume they must already have several factories in China.
I will keep it in its packaging, but you can't imagine how many times my daughters almost opened the bag to get it out of there.
You just gave me an idea, I will take a better photo and use it for my contest I do on Saturdays.

Thank you for contributing more great content to the #SilverGoldStackers tag.
You have created a Precious Gem!
Now that's the way to stack your platinum in plain sight...... you could leave this R2-D2 on your coffee table and no one would know you have $33,000 sitting there in front of them Lol!
Just as long as some family doesn't come visiting with a small child, who decides he likes your R2-D2 and wants to put it in his pocket and take it home Lol😳
No one would realize it was worth anything, although it would be so small it could get lost easily!
😳!!!
Yay!!! Hahaha, who would think!

I played with LEGOs a lot when I was a kid, but after I grew up I don't think I ever played or built anything with them again. It was a very cool and fun time for me.
Too bad you don't have them still, they might be valuable now!

I never know they can be on that price range. I have never buy any lego yet, I mean the real one, only bought the knock off a few time for my son.
that is nice you can get the profit from those old Legos. : )
!PIZZA !PIMP
The sets now can be expensive, they didn't used to be. Knock offs are just as much fun for kids. It is fun to find some for cheap at thrift stores, but there's a lot of luck involved. Sometimes someone else gets there first and buys all the good stuff...

As a kid, I had a complete LEGO collection from a set that came in a series of magazines, each with a box containing a figure and a vehicle. Sadly my mother gave them away to charity because they were taking too much space. The thing is, even she did regret doing so later when she saw how expensive LEGO had become.
@thebighigg, I paid out 1.468 HIVE and 0.286 HBD to reward 14 comments in this discussion thread.
