First of all, I would like to insist on being precautious while travelling since not only your lives are at stake but other's too. So if you are planning to shoot some roads always be extremely careful and only, and I repeat, ONLY do it if you are not putting in danger anybody's life.
Said that, here on my second collection of Roads in Black and White I bring you a selection of roads I drove on my New Zealand trip. If you have ever been to New Zealand you know what I will be talking about. Unbeatable roads! So far, to me, these have been the most beautiful ones I have ever driven in my life. Mainly due to various factors:
- They are generally empty.
This could be a good thing and a bad thing. Being alone on the road means that you are the owner of it. That doesn't mean that you can drive on the opposite side, it's mora that you feel like you are the only one there. Giving you an immense feeling of solitude. I personally like driving feeling alone. - They are extremely beautiful.
The colour tones you see in the south island of New Zealand are difficult to see in other places. Those light blue waters in contrast with the green of the mountains make a picture perfect landscape. - The variety.
On only a couple of hours you can be driving next to high mountains with snow on the top to curved hills that would look more like if giant moles where living there. In one day you can experience completely different landscapes so driving it will always be a surprise for you. - The state of it.
Unless you go off the beaten track you will drive on great quality roads. I know many countries and only a few of them can be proud of the quality of their roads, and New Zealand is one of them. They only thing I would take as negative is that they are not well lit, so try to avoid driving long distances at night.
Without further ado, I will share some of the most beautiful roads I encounter in this incredible country.
In this first picture you can see what I mentioned before, empty roads and beautiful scenery. That is what will be delighting you during your journeys in New Zealand. Imagine that almost every time you take your car, for hours. With landscapes like this you will never get bored of driving. I didn't. And some days I drove for ove six hours!
Here I had to stop to take the picture since I was actually avoiding that weather that was coming. I had to leave that place due to the weather so on my way back I noticed that those clouds were actually giving me a great opportunity of an amazing shot. They looked dark, and dark clouds always give a special feeling on pictures, even more if what we have in front is a long and empty road like this.
Not always you find long and straight roads in New Zealand. You also encounter curvy ones like this. But that makes the journey a bit more enjoyable, right? I personally like curves like these, specially when they are surrounded by vegetation. Although here is when you need to be more careful since you don't know what's coming after taking them.
On this last picture you can see what I was talking about above. The landscape you encounter is just incredible. Image driving along this lake for almost an hour with those mountains in the background. It is very hard to keep an eye on the road. Reason why I was stopping every five minutes to contemplate the nature and obviously take pictures of it.
Again, always remember to stay safe while you drive. A picture is worth a thousand words but a life is priceless, so please be aware of danger and be extremely cautious.
