What Happens When Your Snuffed? ..
I'm not talking The Sopranos sort of "Snuffed", even though I do live in New Jersey. No. I am talking candle kind of "Snuffed". A lot less violent stuff. hehe. When a candle is snuffed, the flame ceases to exist and a waft of smoke may soon fill the air. Which leads me to today’s photo share.
When The Sun Shines Bright ..
When the sun shines bright on the rear windowsills .. I take full advantage of my artistic photographic opportunities. On our south facing window sills, the sun shines in at an indirect angle, illuminating the area. This indirect yet harsh light makes for great back lighting. If you catch the sun at the right angle in the morning, it almost creates a black background.
Several things have to align .. And I always have to take the time to get the camera angle just right, in it's relationship to the sun. If I do then the pictures come out terrific. All the hard work comes with setting up the photo's and after that it is easy as pie.
That is exactly what happened here in this picture. I started off with a votive made of clear glass and a tea light candle. I turned the candle on its side and set it on the windowsill. I then took the next 15 minutes or so to get all of those settings correct. Once I did, then I lit the candle then immediately extinguishing the flame. I began taking photographs from my Canon EOS Rebel T1i attached to a tripod and using a remote shutter release.
The Settings I Used
Shot RAW
Focal Length - 28mm
ISO 800
F-Stop - f/6.3
Exposure - 1/1600sec
I captured many shots but this one in particular spoke out to me .. Because of how underexposed it appeared, yet it retained lots of highlighted details. It was a cross between an underexposed photograph and a silhouette. After the flame was extinguished the smoke billowed out of the votive and into the air, slightly disturbed by subtle air movements. The overall slightly blurry effect achieved was super neat. The smoke appeared as a bright white line with a light curvature and softness to it.
The round angles of the votive, coupled with the light reflections of the glass, along with the harsh line of the windowsill at the bottom, created a photograph with lots of movement and structure. I also like the graininess present in the picture. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of graininess to the photo even though I shot it raw. I considered it a bonus because I like a little grain in black and white photography.
That's What I Call 'Snuffed'!
Like a moth to the flame.. Bitter sweet excitement, then nothing but a memory is left.
Other Shots ..
These are a few other shots taken free hand (no tripod) at different angles. Some of them did not come out as unique as others, but non-the-less FUN FUN FUN!
“The Moth don't care when he sees The Flame.
He might get burned, but he's in the game.
And once he's in, he can't go back, he'll
Beat his wings 'til he burns them black...
No, The Moth don't care when he sees The Flame. . .
The Moth don't care if The Flame is real,
'Cause Flame and Moth got a sweetheart deal.
And nothing fuels a good flirtation,
Like Need and Anger and Desperation...
No, The Moth don't care if The Flame is real. . . ”

Thank you. It's always fun trying something different. Sometimes they come out like crap while other times they come out looking great. A roll of the dice really. 😁
