The last reading of the year was in charge of Professor Leobaldo. As part of the literary group Cielo de Esmalte, Leo has always been enticed by the idea of capturing movement through poetry. He is a Dancer. And also, part of the history of Contemporary Dance in the city. His studies took him abroad to Mexico where he learned a lot of what later became part of the programs around here.
He's taught countless dancers. So when his turn at the table was nigh, we were sure his performance was going to be something else. The stage was the whole house. It started by a number of two experienced dancers performing La Bohemia. This in turn gave way to the central stage. Around the hall, these ladies dressed like Frida Kahlo were part of the welcoming department. Then, we had a class a about the movement where Leo had the help of Carlos, one of our younger poets and also a student of his.
The interlude was a traditional Mexican dance. Something about a Llorona. Not the one you might be thinking about. It was something beautiful. These ladies did a great job capture the sad essence of the song.
We ended the day with poems of Leobaldo. He as worked a lot on his voice and style. His idea of capturing the essence of movement is going well and there's no doubt he will achieve that goal.
For the time being, I knew his reading was going to be outrageous and spectacular. Just like his personality. It is a good thing I didn't miss it.
