The Black Sea

The sea to which I have the easiest access is called the Black Sea. This is a fairly small sea but large enough to share the coastline of several countries, bordering or only bordering by sea.

The country I live in, Romania, has a small part of the Black Sea too. It was the place of many travels in the first part of my life. Adolescence and the first part of adulthood. Bulgaria, Romania's southern neighbor, is much more gifted, has much more sea, and, in my opinion, much more beautiful than Romania. This makes the rest of my life dedicated to sea trips to Bulgaria, especially to Balchik, a small town that includes a short period of the shared history of these two Eastern European countries.

This is a new episode of the Balchik Series!

The sea also means a lot of color. The seawater changes its color several times a day, the sky changes its color too. I thought it would be interesting to see my favorite spot by the sea in black and white, to see if these changes can be seen in tones, not just in color!

Because it is said that in rich, bold tones black and white images can be just as spectacular as color, some say even more so.

Balchik is a resort on the Black Sea, a quiet resort and because it is almost devoid of beaches, it is generally preferred by older people, who prefer walking more than bathing in the sea.

Right in the middle of the resort, there are three flags. The flag of Bulgaria, the flag of Romania, and the flag of Russia. The reasons for these flags here would be the following...

Bulgaria, primarily because this is Bulgaria.
Romania, because most tourists come from Romania.
Russia, because most money comes from Russian tourists. In fact, several major hotels are bought by Russian businessmen.

Romanian tourists have a reason why they prefer this city. The Castle and gardens of Queen Mary of Romania are located here.

Balchik belonged to the Kingdom of Romania, as part of southern Dobrogea, for almost 40 years. Queen Maria of Romania visited this place and was definitively conquered by the light and air here. She decided to build her summer residence here.

A small castle and vast gardens, splendid gardens that now form a museum complex and are the main tourist attraction of the place.

It was the Queen's wish that after her death she be buried in this place, so much did she love it!

This wish could not be fulfilled. Less than two years after the Queen's death, this region and the city of Balchik were returned to Bulgaria. The queen's heart was moved from here to Bran Castle in Romania. A famous castle, Dracula's Transylvanian castle.

After Balchik no longer belonged to Romania all the Romanians who had properties and holiday homes here lost everything.

This is the former villa of important Romanian artists of the first part of the last century, Cecilia and Frederik Stork, painter and sculptor. It's my favorite building. Abandoned, it has deteriorated over time, but now I see that it has started a repair and renovation, a sign that it was bought by someone with a lot of money.

I tried to see this historic resort only in black and white with the help of these photos.

End of the 11th episode.

For me, it's easier to choose color or black and white. When I shoot in older places, places that remind me of the past, memories, and nostalgia, I like to change the photos to monochrome, especially black and white!

This is my entry for the #monomad challenge.

I also have the easiest access to Black Sea, which is about 45 mins by car. The another one is Marmara Sea about 20 mins. Both is available for swimming, but Black Sea is better because it is outside of city, Istanbul. However, Black Sea is know for dangerious waves and it is hard to find the calm.

Well, you get to the sea much easier.

I have always heard about black sea but I have never been there and I don't know what it looks like...
I know the water cannot be black but why is it called black sea?

Because the water is dark when there are storms.

One enjoys visiting such places especially when the weather is like this, there are clouds and one sees the water and travels in a boat, seeing natural things makes one's heart very happy. It happens and the time passes very well and the worries disappear altogether.
