Elk Above Treeline

Above the treeline is one of my favorite places to be. There's just something about it, like stepping into another world.

A bit on the cool side if you ask me but the critters that call it home don't seem to mind.

On one of my adventures above treeline in Rocky Mountain National Park I came across a whole passel of elk, these photos are all from that adventure.

Up there, you get a sense that you exist at Mother Nature's sufferance, it's not the most hospitable of places. The elk seemed similarly indifferent to my presence.

Just don't call'em supper or try to pet them, they don't like that.

When it starts getting cold they head for the lower elevations, wish I could do that when it gets chilly here...

Damn once again... Nice shots, I love pic 5 I'd frame that and charge entry.

Thanks! Really? I almost left that one out, it's the one I was the least satisfied with 😅

I love that shot, glad you used it. I guess I like it because its just such a natural pose.

Lol, the elk wasn't too fond of it, I'd gotten between him and his momma.

hahaha, I bet he wasn't impressed, You got lucky you didn't catch a pair of hooves in the ass. The Elk ladies like to kick.

I was keeping an eye on my six for sure. I think he was a yearling, there were a few about but their mothers seemed rather disinterested in them. Think I snapped 4 or 5 photos of him real quick and then I got out of the way.

Very good shots, my friend! Are they used to be around humans, or did you have a big lens to get such close pictures?
You deserve a slice of !PIZZA 😉🍕

Thanks! They're in a national park so nobody can hunt them so they're not really worried about humans. I was shooting with a 70-300mm lens so I didn't have to get really close but one did walk up to within a few feet of my (that's when the 5th photo was taken).

Nice shots. Cool how you captured that one with the little nurser.

Thanks! I encountered a herd of elk on a few occasions in RMNP but that time was the only one where I actually got shots of them nursing.
