Flood A Comin'

The deluge is nigh upon us! Got a storm rolling in here in the next hour or so that's supposed to bring us all sorts of severe nastiness, and then stall out and just hang around. They calling for Louisville to get 10 inches or more of rain in the next few days, which is double what we normally get in the entire month of April.

Happened to check the weather yesterday and noticed the National Weather Service had issued a flood watch that include this fun bit:

This is expected to be a high end event with life-threatening flooding. Major flash flooding and river flooding will be possible. Complete any flooding preparation by Wednesday.

Hadn't really been planning on doing flooding prep, but I hadn't ever seen a weather service notice like that either. Decided it couldn't hurt to do a bit, headed to the hardware store only to discover they were out of sandbags already. Still had plenty of sand, brought some home and made improvised sandbags out of trash bags and old supermarket bags.

Got my ditches and drains clear, now there's nothing to do but put on my flood song and watch and see if we get tornados. Had one of those touch down about 5 miles from the house Sunday evening, that was enough for a week or two at least.

Photos are all from the flooding in February, when we only got seven inches of rain. Newsies were calling this a 'generational' event, will let y'all know if it lives up to its billing in a couple days. Assuming we don't blow or float away. Until next time, stay dry y'all.

Sort:

I need to head over to Falls Park in Post Falls to see what the spring runoff is doing. Smaller creeks and streams here are full, but not overtopping the banks.

I think the Ohio just exceeded its banks today, flood stage here is 55 feet, they're predicting it to crest at 68 feet, which is still just a hair shy of being labeled "major flooding". It's not supposed to crest for four more days, reckon I'll wander down to the river then and check it out. There's a waterfall on Fort Knox that you can hike to without having to jump through all the hoops of entering the base that'd be cool to see right now but I think the river floods the road to it.
