Runnin Round at the Ranch

If you're ever taking I-40 across the Texas panhandle and happen to notice a strange sight just off the interstate outside Amarillo, don't worry, you're not hallucinating. Trust me, those ten Cadillacs are supposed to be sticking out of the ground like that!

Some artists got a bright idea and found the right rich guy to help them make it happen and voila! Ten Caddys half buried in the dirt just waiting for passers-by to take spray paint to them.

Amarillo kept growing closer and closer as time went on, eventually they were moved to another field further out from the city. Surrounded by farmland, they're located a hop, skip, and a jump from the I-40 access road, just begging for you to stop and say hey!

They also make for a great playground but I would advise exercising caution if you climb on them, time hasn't been too kind on some of the metal and it seemed a bit flimsy.

That's not to say that it can't be done, as you can see I couldn't resist the temptation to get a slightly different view of them.

Anybody can add their own improvements the the caddies' paint jobs, we didn't even bring any spray paint but strangers kept giving us their leftovers as they were leaving so we had no problems in that regard. With all the 'improvements' they're constantly changing, nobody's handiwork lasts very long there.

With its location just off the interstate there is a constant trickle of visitors, getting shots without people in them proved to be quite the challenge. Otherwise it is a rather fun place to stop and see and play around, we ended up spending a few hours there. It's also a great way to break up the monotony that is driving across that part of the country, so if you're ever in the area, take a few minutes and drop by and say hi!

Sort:

Dude I've driven that 40 through Amarillo at least 4 times and I've never seen it.

Shit the bed!

If I remember correctly it's just to the west of Amarillo, you park on the sides of the access road for I-40 to get to it. In the next to last photo you can see one of the billboards along I-40 and can kinda make out the interstate.
